every once and a while when i try to start my car, i turn the key and all i hear is a *clunk*. If i do this once or twice more it will finally start...
it happened very rarely before but now its starting to occur about every time i start my car, and now my car hesitates at WOT up high (not sure if the 2 problems are related).
Typically, with a situation like you describe, it's because the solenoid is not engaging the starter properly. That sounds especially true since you say that it usually works by retrying it. If that is the case, it will just continue to get worse until it doesn't work any more. I haven't had to dig into my starter and without knowing more about your car, I can't tell you if you can replace just the solenoid, or if you will have to replace the whole starter. Either way, it's not a big deal (obviously, the whole starter would be more expensive).
The other problem could be a number of things. Do you mean hesitation or skip? If it is a hesitation, I would suspect fuel-related. If it is a skip, I would look at ignition components.
