You talking about an EGR? It lets exhaust gasses into the intake manifold for emissions purposes. It also cools internal temperatures inside the cylinders when necessary. Not really a performance gain if you take it off, but you will definitely throw a code. The one on my car is borderline bad, but at $165 (cheapest I could find) It will stay that way for a few more weeks.

yea thats it my dad is a mechanic and he says thats whats wrong with my car so i will have to replace it doh! oh well

Before you do
Try cleaning the path ways to and from the egr valve. I got codes and mine were just blocked. undo the pipe that goes from the egr to the plenum and clean it out totally. Take it off the egr side as well. it is a 200 part.

in addition to reducing the noxious emission NOx, EGR is also designed to reduce detonation (spark knock) in these engines by controlling combustion chamber temps. egr codes are sometimes accompanied by knock sensor codes or o2s codes and solving the egr problem fixes both dtc's.

I tried that. I completely tore mine down, cleaned every part thoroughly, put a light oil on the springs and pistons, and cleaned the terminals on top. It worked fine for three days, then I threw a code. That tells me that it's not a mechanical issue, it's electrical. Not a whole lot I can do about that. It only throws codes when I'm on the throttle hard then I back down to a coast. The code drops after about 3 minutes of normal highway driving.

Mine did the same thing you just explained. I took it to the dealer and they said it just needed to be cleaned. They did something else though because I cleaned it myself they must have used a brush or a stronger chemical.

My EGR valve is crapping out too. I've been getting an SES light usually once a week which lasts a day then turns off after a few trips. Took it in and had it scanned...bad EGR.

Chevrolet wanted like $300...so I'm just putting it off. I'd imagine I'll have to get it fixed in order to pass CA SMOG emissions testing. Sure is expensive for sure a small part.

So is it totally bad or going bad because the SES isn't on all the time.

My EGR is crap too... here's how you pass emissions with a bad EGR valve (I did it last year AND this year... muhahaha)

Your car will have less emissions when it's cold... try and explain that one!! Before running it at your local smog tester place, pull off to the side next to the lines, pop the hood and let your engine completely cool down. Leave it running just long enough to get it in line and wait patiently with the engine off. You want it COLD... I kid you not if you don't pass, you'll come much closer.

I went out and bought all new gaskets for the EGR valve, pulled it all apart, throughly cleaned it, and put it back together again and gained nothing from it. Don't waste your time... clean the tubes but leave the valve in tact in my opinion.

It's not so much the EGR working or not, it's the SES light. You won't pass with it on. My smog is due and I'm not going to risk it. I fear nothing more than the GROSS POLLUTER label.

Like I said, my SES comes on maybe once a week...

so if I take it in on one of those days when the SES is off, should it pass with a crapping EGR?

it was my mistake about the ecr spelling error. not my fathers he knows well what he is talking about. better than anyone else around here. in the shop he works at he basically gets called on for all the stuff no one else knows how to do. He is awesome with mechanics.

i don't know how hard your emissions tests are in california , but i passed mine in illinois with a bad egr, it was close but i passed
