  • 95 3.4 Hard Start Problem

Stock 95 Camaro, 135K on the clock.

Hard/rough start when outside temps are below 45deg and engine is cold. Engine will crank, fire up, then die immediately. Eventually it will start and idle normal which is still a little rough. Here is what has been done and what I have tested.

New plugs & wires. Two of the injectors were sticking open, so it now has 6 new, GM, injectors. Engine temp sensor replaced. New fuel filter.

I have tested the fuel pressure. Reads 41 with ignition turned to on, 34-36 when cranking, 44 at idle with FPR vac disconnected, 36 at idle with FPR vac connected, and 44 @ WOT. Holds pressure for hours after shut off. I don't think the fuel pump or FPR are suspect. I'm getting an intermittent SES for the EGR, no other codes.

Car has a rough idle & slight stumble when accelerating slowly. Runs like a bat out of hell at WOT. When the outside temps are warmer, it will start no problem, but still has the rough idle.

I'm leaning toward the 24x crank sensor, the ICM, or coil packs. All are original as far as I know.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

I'd check that EGR problem first, maybe the valve is sticking open, letting too much exhaust gas in at low speeds. If you're getting a code, and at the same time your having noticeable problems, it needs to be checked. EGR stuck-open symptoms include sputtering on slow acceleration or deceleration. At least that's how one of my old cars did when it had a stuck EGR. I don't think I had idle problems though. But check your EGR before you go spending money replacing stuff that may not need replacing.

I should have added that I made an EGR block off plate & ran with it for a few days. It only slightly helped the rough idle & hesitation, but also gave me detonation. Made no difference with the hard start.
