    ok, say you have the money for this little assignment. now do you...

    A: buy an LT1 for a really good price and with the left over money you bore it out and make it a 383 stroker;

    B: buy an LS1 at a higher price and replace the intake manifold and cylinder heads with the stock GM performance parts from a Z06 then have the heads ported; or

    C: try to find a reasonable price on an LQ4 6 liter V8 replacing the cylinder heads and manifold with the Z06 parts, swap the oil pan out with an f-body oil pan and if the funds are there bore it out to 434?

    overall performance would suggest the LT1 stroker, but the LS1, and LQ4 variant of the LS1, would be the more reliable motors. the LS1 with the new heads and manifold would be comparable to an LS6 and the LQ4 would probably be making some mad power. i think the stroker would be great, but is it really better to go with an older motor?

    all accessories will be included with the motor. the most costly of this assignment will be the purchase of the T56 tranny (those things are freakin' high dollar right now). labor has been worked out (we're anticipating the weekend and a few days into the week) as well as the parts to be replaced. everything has been worked out aside from the motor. most parts to be replaced will be new aftermarket parts, other than the driveshaft and the donor motor. at this point it is decision making time. before this amount of money is spent a lot of homework must be done.

    one other thing...the motor may get a 75hp shot of NOS thrown in for good measure (but only because the switches look cool).

    discreet, low-key, and sleeper status are the priorities here.

    my opinion would be to do the LS1-&gt;LS6 conversion, as personally i think the LQ4 may give too much power for a street vehicle, well not too much power persay but drivability would come into play. this is just what i would do, i would stay away from the LT1, while its a good motor its still an LT1....go with something newer and if u can bore the LS1 out a little, couldnt hurt

      Personally, I'd go LS1
      but you can get a LT1 for half the price of any of those other engines, use the remaining money to do even more to the LT1

        well I would stay away from the LQ4 option.. the thing with an LT1 is parts are relatively cheap. But if you have the money to go the LS1/6 route I would! I read about a guy who does work with the LS1's as far as porting heads, swapping to the LS6 intake and basically takes a stock LS1 and turns it into a balanced and blueprinted LS6. They were making nice reliable power. Might want to hit the Car and Driver website and do some looking. I think that would definitely be the coolest option.

          LQ4 bored .030, 4.250 lunati stroker crank, Z06 heads.

            I would go the LQ4 route, but leave the bottom end alone, as far as stroking it, a little boring and some forged pistons would work, put the Z06 top end with some head/intake work, then let her rip...a 434 small block is overkill, period, even as a race motor,if you want a motor that big why not just buy a big block? you can run way faster at less RPM's with a big block!

              an LQ4 is basically an LS1 only it's an iron block and the manifold is a few inches taller. if i swap the manifold and the oil pan it will work the same as an LS1 would. it's base HP is only 300, but with new heads, manifold, and some other niceties, it should be closer to 400.

              the LT1 was my first choice, but after looking into it more, i think i'm gonna scratch that one off the list; unless i just get an outrageous deal on one.

              as far as the added power, the car is going to be built to handle it. i have a guy who builds race cars, one who works at a performance shop, and two mechanics helping out with the labor. the race car guy is itching to see an LQ4 in it and already described to me how his wet dream of seeing the LQ4 bored out would be.

              i'm kinda liking the majority vote here....LS1 with Z06 parts. the cheapest i've found an LS6 for has been around $5500. that's not reasonable enough for just the plain motor.

                I'm thinking the LQ4 would be pretty cool...

                But remember that you can turn an LSX into a 422 if you wanted to. What I would do is compare the costs. The LQ4 would be pretty unique wouldn't it? But by the same reasoning, the LSX might make more sense since the cars are designed to take them...

                  stay away from the ls1-ls6 thing. One there are problems with the ls6 motor. They are not 100 percent stable at this time. Changing intake on an ls1 to that of the ls6 does not produce but perhaps 5 hp gains, you would also have to have the ls6 tranny and everything else to make it even close to the performance. So Ls1-ls6 is a waste of time, you should just by the ls6 and tranny at one time.

                  Your cheaper and faster route is to do the lt1 383
                  the go fast parts are cheaper. Do you want to spend 1500 on headers for an ls1 ? Price out the performance add on's and you will see it is not worth the money.

                  You can spend 4000 on an ls1 motor and be sitting at 450 or so rwhp when you can spend 6 grand and supercharge it and sit at 500+ on the stock motor.

                  Just plan it out before you get into deep.

                    Uhh dude the tranny is the same. Except in the Corvette where all trannies are totally different because they are rear mounted. I say go with the 6.0. I have been thinking about doing this to mine for sometime and someday I may acomplish it.

                      you can make the ls1 a 427. You can bore it to I believe 4.127(probably not exact) and put a 4.00 crank in it. That just sounds kick *** having a 427 LS1 in your car. Imports can say hello to just space between your tail lights and their eyes.

                          i just found a 4.8 with all accessories out of a brand new 'wrecked' silverado for $800. it's the same block as an LS1, but it's a little smaller in displacement. it puts out around 260hp. i could punch that out a little and make over 300.

                          i've also been talking with some LT1 guys in other forums. they, obviously, prefer the LT1 because it has more power in the lower range. plus, i could totally pimp out an LT1 with the money i'd save opposed to an LS1. the only thing is, how much would i really have to change going to an LT1 rather than an LS1?

                          i still haven't been able to find a place that has an LQ4 yet. i'm still hunting. i want to see what price i'm looking at on those before i start to put money on the table.

                            actually, you can bore the LQ4 to .030 over and use a 4.250 stroker crank. that would make it a 434.

                            and prices for LT1 parts as opposed to LS1 parts are pretty much the same. i found a set of hooker headers for LT1 are same price as LS1...$350 for black ones, $650 for ceramic coated.

                              id say go with the Lt1 and get the stroker kit...YES the Ls1 is great engine...but the price difference is pretty big for just 40hp.

                              I will be doing the LT1 swap hopefully this coming winter =)
