• Airbag question

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, seems so to me.

I was in an accident, and it caused my airbags to deploy. I was wondering a few things about this, since the damage isn't too bad and I'm fixing it up.

1) Where is the front airbag sensor? I can't find it (97 V6 Camaro).
2) I have new airbags to put in, but before I do it I was wondering about the airbag code. I'm assuming that if I just install my new ones they'll pop right out since the code is still there. If I remove the airbag fuse and disconnect the battery, will that reset it, or do I need to clear the code out of the computer?
3) Can I reset the airbag sensor, or is it a one time use type of thing?

Thanks in advance.

I have a 2001 3.8 Firebird, all I know is that when I removed the middle console with the shifter and cup holder there was the airbag sensor.

All the other stuff u sed makes sense thoh

I did get that sensor with the airbags (rescued from James' garbage haha), but I would assume that somewhere in the front of/around the radiator there's a sensor... or is that the one in the console was somehow tripped by impact???

ELECTRONICS CONFUSE ME!! haha

The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module is in the center column, next to the shifter. It uses an accelerometer to measure the force of an impact.

The service manual says that any time the airbag is deployed, you must change the SDM.

Thanks man... so I should be set if I: disconnect bettery and SIR fuse, remove airbags and SDM, install new airbags and SDM??

(That's what I get for getting the Chilton instead of the GM service manual... lol)

It also says to unhook the 2 yellow connectors at the steering column and passenger side to make sure it doesn't go off.

Besides that, just check the wiring at the connectors to make sure they're not melted or scorched or anything.

Hold on..... I think the best solution would be to actually pay someone that is certified to install and reset an airbag to do the job.

This is one area that is not good for the shadetree to try and save $$$$

Think about it you will have no way to test if you have it installed and set up properly. Please let the experts handle this one.

I'm not resetting it... totally replacing. Me, Chilton's, and if need be there's a few people around who I could ask for help.
I do not have that kind of money (i was told it would be anywhere from a grand to 3 grand)
I have the new airbags and sensor, all out of the same car (they're out of a 12 second car... so... how much faster will I go now? haha)
What tests do you suggest are done to see if it's installed properly?

With fixing up my car, the windshield replacement I'm getting done professionally as there's no way for me to do that. Everything else tho I'm doing myself, with many resorces available... unles you know something I don't, or wanna write me a check.

He is taking many precautions, trust me.

Parts are from my birdie

We've gone over some of the components.... I think it will be a straight install on the module in the center console and drivers side air bag. Passenger side is gonna be a b*tch :(

He'll do fine, he is just taking all precautions, smart person

I can understand the lack of funds.... I am under a tight budget myself.

I just wanted to be the voice of reason.

Maybe call someone at your local dealership, talk to a tech and tell them that your doing the work yourself and ask them if it sounds like you have all of you I's dotted and T's crossed.

I do all of the work on my 96 camaro, 79 powerwagon, and my gf's 01 grand prix and I probably wouldn't tackle this job myself.

Thanks man, that sounds like a good idea with calling to check, I think I'll do that (and make sure they dont try to drag me in for them to do it hehe).

Sorry if I came off harsh before, didn't mean it if I did.

I'll chime in, and second the voice of reason.

You already have the expensive parts. Just call around to see what it would cost to have it installed by a professional garage. It might not be that much anyways.
