  • egr question

ok, aside from possible error codes is there any problem with blocking off the egr.

  • #2
Increased emissions, higher combustion chamber temps, detonation, lower gas mileage.

Alot of times people - like myself - block them off because it's damn near impossible to hook up correctly with aftermarket headers. You run the risk of detonation, but if you can't get it to fit what are you gonna do?

It tends to malfunction alot, especially on 3.4's. Solenoid #3 loves to be whore at highway speeds and not open correctly, thus giving you a SES code, it don't increase detonation nor combustion temps, our ain't digital like the 3.8 You lower gas ,milage by about 1-2 miles a tank, I wouldn't recommend removing it, it's just annoying to constantly have a light on. I blocked mine for a while but i left the egr connected to the harness to prevent any codes from going off, just leave it on.

EGR opens @ WOT, what do you mean? Each solenoid fires one after the other, #3 opens somewhere around 3k rpms 60-65 mph.

It may or may not be digital, but that has nothing to do with it. The whole point of EGR is to lower combustion chamber temps which reduces NOx emissions and detonation.

I keep my egr hooked up after i installed my headers. Although, I put a block off plate on the headers and a breather on the end of the egr. So, now it breaths in cooler air compared to the hot exhaust air, also I'm sure my TB stays cleaner now. :D

I can hear my egr suck in air too. At first I was like WTF is that sound coming from. I don't have a breather on it though, it's just open. Blocked off on the header.

I have a question. I was always told that blocking it off kept you from sucking in all that hot air. How do you have hotter combustion chamber. Or am I misinformed. (never had detonation problems, but I always run 93 octane, could be that overcomes it)
