Anybody with a 98+ that has a rear main oil leak..
Anybody with a 98+ that has a rear main oil leak..
I've noticed that there are quite a few people finding that they have a rear main leak on 98 and up 3.8s. I only have 40K on my car, and I've had the leak for a little while now.
If we can get enough people together on here, and maybe if Stefan and/or the other moderators could arrange something on here, we could send a group letter or mass mailing to GM, and see if they will replace the seals for us?

I've got the leak. I'm taking it in under my extended warranty though. Ya, it's BS thought. Must be some manufacturing defect. They probably won't do anything though. Just like with the window motors. Ya, they're notorious for dying out but GMs not going to replace everyone's for free.

Well, if we get enough people here that have had the leak, there's the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission, class action suits, and the media. Especially with all the crap going on right now with "questionable accounting practices", I'm sure GM would like to avoid straying into the sights of the government. Besides, they're charging upwards of $20,000 for these cars, and can't even manage to put in a decent rear main seal, which should be academic at this point. That, of course, doesn't include all the other little problems people are having (windows, alternators, transmissions, etc.). It's BS that we have to put up with that crap, and it's even bigger BS that they just try to brush us off.

where's it at?
I should know this, but for some reason I dont.

Between the tranny and rear of oil pan. If you see oil....
I have it now, had it since ~36k. Now I got 70k and am about to replace it cuz it's pretty noticeable now. While I am at it, I am going to change the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing. The tranny mount is a bit oily, but I'll just clean it up and change it some other time, even though oil is bad for the rubber.
My cat just took a chit on top of that.

Here's the e-mail that I sent to Chevy:
My warranty is expired, however, the rear main seal on my engine is leaking oil, and I am not the only one with this problem at this mileage. Getting a rear main leak this soon is unacceptable, and is only one of several problems that I have had with this Camaro. I am writing now to find out if you (Chevy) will fix this problem, and if you do not, to let you know that I am going to explore legal options.
Since purchasing this car in February 2002 with 13,778 miles on it, I have had window seals changed, I have had to change the brake rotors because they warped so easily, I have had to replace the alternator because the regulator went bad, the regulator in the replacement alternator is already going bad and I am going to have to troubleshoot the wiring to find what is causing the regulators to go bad, I have suspicions about either my transmission and/or torque converter, and now the rear main seal leaks.
This is ridiculous. Chevrolet seems to have taken the attitude of "Piss on the customer". I hope that this can be resolved quickly, and I certainly hope that Chevy will do better by it's customers in the future.

Yeah, it seems to be a big problem -- just do a search for "rear main seal" on the board and see how many hits you get. I think leaks are just a problem affecting many GM engines; the LT1s are notorious for their intake leak, and I've seen rear main seal leaks on Cadillac Northstars too.
I'm taking mine in tomorrow (52K, leak started about 10K ago) because I just lost 2 quarts of oil over the last 2K miles. $600 isn't chump change to any of us V6 drivers, so I will probably call Pontiac's customer service number and see what they can do.
BTW, forget the recall or voluntary fix. GM is fixing 2001 Z06 oil consumption problems on a need-basis only, and those folks spent over $50K on their car! What makes you think they'll even bother with an entry-level F-body?

My car has only 33k on it and I've had the leak since about 25k (I got the car with 20k on it and it was out of warranty ~1 month after I got it). I used to work at a Pontiac dealer and I'm still a good customer there so I am going to see if they will do anything to help me.
Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
