can anyone identify the noise my engine makes?

i have had my bird for about a week now, its a 97 with 55,000 miles. when i accelerate hard, there is a rattling sound that comes from under the hood, and when i push in the clutch there is a click sound from under the car. any ideas?

The rattling sound is most likely your valves under a load. Ignore it.

The click is most likely your clutch slave contacting the arm. Ignore it.

It may just be the heat shield above the cat. Easy fix just get a bunch of hose clamps connect them all together. Put them around heat shield / cat and tighten. If it stops rattling that was it. If not sorry.

how bad is the rattle? Is it predetonation or does it sound like a tapping or a rattle?

One source of a rattle is the Y-Pipe. I am not sure about yours, but my 3.4 has a double walled Y-pipe that came loose at 35K and again at 60K. This make a loud rattle almost like a crap load of predetonation......my first fix was a replacement under warrently...the second was drilling a couple of holes in the pipe and welding them closed (thus binding the two pipes)

The seconed source which is more of a tapping under acceleration is a leak in the EGR.

The third source of tapping is predetonation, which can be hazardous to the engine...but unlikely if you don't have a lot of mods....higher octane gas can solve this issue.
