My brother-in-law's car just did the same thing last monday. He was on the highway and it cut off with no warning. Although it wouldn't start back up right away. It had to sit for about 5 minutes, then it kicked over. Scanned it and the computer said it was a faulty cam position sensor...ouch! They are a pita to replace.
I don't know what kind of car your brother-in-law drives, but if you have that problem on a L36 then you're in luck, because the CMP Sensor is very easy to change in our engines. ;)
my car died this morning, i left it out to warm up for about 7 minutes, came out, got in, and the second i put it in drive it died (coincidence im 100% sure). started up just fine. wasnt even violent it just stopped. oh well its not too bad.
My fault, it's the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Too friggin cold here in philly to do it in the driveway (8 degrees F out there now), so he's sending it to a mechanic.
Ahh yes, you are correct in that the CKP Sensor is quite a pain in the ***.
I can only imagine trying to change it in weather like that!

I usually have to double, triple my headlight switch for them to come up on my 97 Firebird. I cleaned all connections. Could it be the headlight switch...
