My brother-in-law's car just did the same thing last monday. He was on the highway and it cut off with no warning. Although it wouldn't start back up right away. It had to sit for about 5 minutes, then it kicked over. Scanned it and the computer said it was a faulty cam position sensor...ouch! They are a pita to replace.

I don't know what kind of car your brother-in-law drives, but if you have that problem on a L36 then you're in luck, because the CMP Sensor is very easy to change in our engines. ;)

He might have meant crank not cam. The crank sensor is not hard but it is a PITA.

My fault, it's the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Too friggin cold here in philly to do it in the driveway (8 degrees F out there now), so he's sending it to a mechanic.

Ahh yes, you are correct in that the CKP Sensor is quite a pain in the ***.
I can only imagine trying to change it in weather like that!
