• 3.4 vs 3.8 how much of a difference?

I was just wonderig, I know the engine is alot bigger and about 40 more hp, but how much is it a difference really? 3.4 birds/camaros take down 3.8 stangs, so how badly would a 3.8 bird take a 3.4? if so? what would be the quickest mods to take a 3.8? thanks

I don't know; My 3.4 is a 5 speed, and I have flowmasters, and the people who I ask say a stock 3.8L auto would beat me or it would be close. I'm going to get a K&N CAI, and then will it be close?

Take the 3.8..trust me. I used to own a '95 3.4 Camaro and my brother owns a '95 3.4 Firebird and my 3.8 blows his car away and he has an exhaust and CAI. My engine's engine basically stock..just a flowmaster muffler. Get the 3.8....its alot of better

3.8 Mustangs are slow. The 90's models only had like 140-150hp, and the new ones have 190. Most 3.8 Firebirds can probably take the V8 Mustangs.

I beat my friend's 3.4 when my car was stock...he had a catback, intake and a hi-flo cat. I thought he would have given me more of a run...

Right now I have the SLP CAI, 2.75" pipe with a Flowmaster 80...I can take down the older V8 Mustangs with no problems.

i have a 94 3.4 and my car has got some mad pickup.. my friend (who posts here) selbs34.. he has a 3.8 and ive driven his i dont see the "HUGE" difference you gusy are talking about. it has good pickup but so does mine.. his is AUTO and mine is 5-speed.. but like i said if we raced i think it would be a very good race.. and he's had a tune up.. i havent and his is a 96.. so i dont think there is much of a difference other than #'s

lol you said face a 3.8 with 3.42.. we're not talking about a 3.4 vs a 3.8 w/ mods.. we're talking about what it would take to beat a 3.8 with a 3.4.. and i must say i dont think it would take much.. possibly exhaust/cat/intake/filter?

First, a lot of the 3.8s come with 3.42s STOCK.

Second, in general a stock 3.4 f-body will run ~16.5 in the 1/4. A stock, auto 3.8 will run a high-15 (some are mid-low 15s stock) With intake/exhaust/cat, you might see a half a second taken off the 1/4 time (VERY optimistically) there ya go. A stock 3.8 still beats the lightly modded 3.4. (take the bench-racing margin of error into account.)

                            I own a completely stock 94 3.4, but I've also driven a 3.8, and from what I can tell the 3.8 has a definite advantage. Given a choice, I'd take a 3.8 over my 3.4.
