The FMU is designed to give you more fuel than the injectors normally could. It does this by raising the fuel pressure. The PCM does not communicate with the FMU so it tries to add fuel the only way it can. Once the injectors go static, the PCM cannot add any more fuel. That is when the FMU increases fuel pressure to give you more fuel. In theory, it should work fine. The only problem is it is a very rough adjustment. The Dyno should tell you how good a job it is doing.
The only other option is to increase the injector size. This will help with low boost (don’t ask me how much) however, once you max out your Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF), the car uses Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) to add fuel. Our MAP sensors only go to 1 bar (zero boost). You can get a 2 bar MAP and then HP Tuners has a PCM mod that will add 2 bar support to your PCM. I think it costs $299. So, you would need bigger injectrs and a modified PCM.
If the FMU is working for you, stick with it. If you want to tweek every HP out of the car, spend the $1000+ to make it perfect ($549 HP Tuners with EIO, $315 Wide Band O2, $75 used injectors, $45 injector connector adapters, $299 2 Bar MAP program)
However, after writing all this, I see you have a 1996. You do not need to go to the drive by wire but you would need to go to the 1997 PCM (which I think is not a drive by wire but I might be wrong). A few people have changed to a 1997 PCM and it works but again, I could be wrong.
Regardless, the above info is accurate if anybody with a 1997+ wants to get rid of the FMU.
