the motor in my flip up light is just about to go. Everytime i turn off my lights it closes and makes this awful noise for like 10 seconds. I did a little reserach and i found this metal motor you can install and they have a lifetime warrenty. On that website i ordered those from it told me that as a temporary fix you could take the motor out that is in there now, and flip it 180 degrees and it would be ok for temp. Is this true?? and if it is true can someone give me a website or instructions on how to fix it??
Thanks in advance!!
Yes, this is a good fix. More than temporary I'd say, it doubles the gear life.
When the headlights flip up, the big plastic gear (which has gotten stripped in your car) moves through less than 180*. Giving the gear a 180 and remounting it gives it an untouched surface to ride on.
Here's a text only site, if you google for a bunch of terms like "firebird headlight motor gear" I know there's sites with photos
you don't actually take the motor itself off. You just manually turn the knob until the headlight is all the way up, then take off the plastic casing of the headlight housing. Then using the appropriate wrench, remove the nut that holds the raising/lowering arm to the shaft out of the motor gear box. Then pull the arm off after the nut is removed, may take some prying but be careful. After it is off, notice the flat spots on the shaft. Turn the knob on the motor until they have rotated 180 degrees. Then put everything back together.
