  • resetting the ECU

A friend of mine showed me this on a Celica site. Just wondering if this procedure applies to just about every car. If so, wouldn't this make things a lot easier than getting the ECU reflashed?

"If you've noticed lately your car has been running awkward or idling at very low rpms or even idling roughly, then your ECU needs to be reset. It is also a good idea to reset your ECU if you've added any performance mods like headers, intake, exhaust; doing this will let you take full advantage of your mods and reset your Air/Fuel mixture ratio so that you can get more horsepower and better gas mileage.

Here's how to reset your ECU. First, start your car and let it warm up. When it's reached it normal operating temperature, turn the car off. Then, pop the hood and remove the Relay Fuses box cover and remove the following fuses: The Hazard fuse, the EFI fuse, and the ECU fuse. Take them out and leave them sit out for 1 minute. Then when the minute is up, put the fuses back in and start up your car. At this time the ECU is being reset so you can take advantage of your mods and get better gas mileage. When you start it up, let it run for exactly 10 minutes, then turn your car off. then start it again and you wil notice your car idle better and from that point on you will now have better gas mileage and your mods will be put to use. To reset the computer on my Formula (i think it's the same for the 6's) I put the key in the ignition turn to the on position with out starting the car, the pull the PCM Bat fuse followed by the PCM Ign fuse. Then turn the key so it's off and replace the fuses. Then the computer's reset.

I had to pull 4 fuses. Look in the owners manual. Yank everything marked PCM as described above. It worked great for me! edit....my car ran REALLY slow for the first 100-150 miles afterwarf, then it WOKE UP! It runs better now than it ever has!

UNLESS you have a SES light, pulling PCM fuses or disconnecting the battery is a worthless "mod".

It does NOT help your PCM learn faster. All it does is reset everything back to the original FACTORY settings, thereby FORGETTING everything the PCM already knew about your engine.

Once in "Closed Loop Mode" the PCM will learn and adjust to ANY mod you have done.

People need to STOP spreading this Myth.

That's why I asked. Thanks for clarifying it for me.
