  • PLEASE HELP! Won't Start, Tried everything

    Allright, Here's what's going on...
I've got a 1996 Firebird, with the Y87 package. I've been in love with this car ever since I got it. It's been through hell and back, but the engine has always run strong, and it's been a great ride, but now things have gotten bad.

The other day on the way to work, it started sputtering real bad on the interstate. I managed to make it to a gas station, and as soon as I did, it died. It didnt start for about 30 mins, then fired up again and made it about a block before it died. It hasnt started since then. It hadnt had any problems or misfires for months (Since I changed the ICM) Let me start by eliminating some possibilities so you guys can help me out...

    Ignition:
    It's getting spark...
    New plugs, wires, coils, ICM

    Fuel:
    Not so sure...
New fuel pump, new fuel filter, new fuel pressure regulator.
HOWEVER, when I hook a pressure tester up to the schrader vavle, its reads nothing, zip.
I know the pump is running, when I turn on the ignition, I can hear it power up. What's going on??? What have I missed? I rely on this car, but I'm stumped. I'm hoping one of you FAQ gods can think of something. I've looked all over the boards and havent found anything. Please help!!!

just a guess but maybe fuel pump relay or maybe a fuse

maybe your crankshaft sensor, or fuel pump is bad

have some one turn it over and you at the rear, get close to the exhaust pipe and see if you smell gas,, it should be strong.

Are you sure you're hearing your pump running or is it something else? (like power antenna). Get down under the back of the car and listen for the fuel pump to run when the ignition is put into the run position. You should hear the pump start, then run a few seconds, and then shut off.

If you can hear the pump running:
          - confirm that there is fuel pressure when the pump is running. This means that while you are watching the pressure gauge (that you attached to the shrader valve on the fuel rail), have someone cycle the ignition from off to run.
          - if there is fuel pressure, start looking at something else, like crank angle sensor, etc.
          - if there isn't fuel pressure, there is a blockage in the system. Start with the fuel filter.

If you can't hear the pump running:
          - check the easy things first, like the fuse and/or relay (burnt fuse is indicator of short circuits).
          - then check electrical wiring and connectors for opens or shorts,
          - lastly check if pump is getting power by measuring the voltage at the pump connector. (good luck at getting to that, need to make access cutout) because if the cicuit is ok and power is measured at the pump connector it means that the pump has failed and pump replacement (again) is required.
