  • o2 Sensors and Smog tips?

Does anyone know the the right way to check and also the readings of a good o2 sensor when using a multimeter? I want to check the 3 o2 sensors to make sure they should be working properly before i take the car in for the next smog test in a few weeks. I saw somewhere (but dont remember where) how to check for faulty o2 sensors, so if someone knows can you let me know.

The car didnt pass smog when the guy i bought it from took it for smog test. emissions were a bit over the limit and the car was running rough back then. He also had not been driving it since he got a new car and drove it straight to the smog shop a couple of miles from his house. So for one, he didnt let the car or catalytic converter get hot. It had been sitting in the cold the last several weeks for the most part. everything past visual inspection except the PCV hose on the passenger side valve cover with the rubber grommet was not hooked up (not the PCV valve itself side), and the car had passed smogged last july. I called my friend who owns a smog shop, gave him the numbers of the smog and he told me the car was running rich but the numbers were not that bad and to buy the car if i can get it a a good price. said could be just an o2 sensor or performance of the motor. Also, the check engine light is not an issue, which is an automatic fail at a smog test.

When i got the car, i put new spark plugs(bosch 2's) and spark plug wires, new PCV valve, new air filter(was dirty),motor flush before new oil change with Slick 50, Slick 50 fuel system, and thats world famous emssions reducer and Chevron supreme gas. The spark plug wires were so old and bad, 3 of the tips ripped off the spark plug ends and one wire was melted thru to the center from manifold melt. I was suprised after seeing the wire conditons that this car was even starting and running. Needless to say, after the plugs and wires, the roughness went away and the motor performance increased 1000%!. It runs really good now and lots of power. I got the guy down almost a grand because the motor was not running all that great.

CAN ANYONE THINK OF OTHER TRICKS OR ITEMS TO CHECK before i take it for its next smog? I think the combined bad performance of the motor of one cylinder probably not burning good due to bad wires, and not driving the car around and not heating up the cat were the reasons why the car did not pass smog. So if you know smog tricks, let me know. i want to do everything i can before taking it in. Im gonna go a drive for about 30 minutes or so to get the cat up to temp. With all that ive done so far and the change in performance, im already feeling a lot better of this car passing smog, since it passed only last july.

Let me know what you know. One last thing, this car has no modifications or aftermarket parts. thanks.

id say it sould pass the tests now. Did you replace the fuel filter, coil packs, that would just about complete your basic tune up. How old is this car, you might want to replace the o2 sensers as well, my car is a 97 and i replaced all 4 of them at 105k, it really did make a small diffrence in my fuel milage.
