  • o2s, coils, wires, what is it?

In the last 4 weeks I've replaced my fuel pump (twice, the first one was defective). The starter just a couple of days ago and now I have a new problem. Unfortunately, the newest Gremlin is hiding pretty good, so I need some help. Here's what happens:

I start the car, the rpms jump up like usual and then it comes back to idle at around 1000 rpm. As soon as it stabilizes at 1000 rpm it drops to about 600-700 rpm and the Service Engine Soon light comes on. The car will recover from this dip in rpm and stabilize again around 1000 rpm. But now there is a serious lack in power.

To make matters worse I cannot retrieve the error code because of an inconsistency in wiring (That's gonna be another question entirely).

I have no previous service records, except a newer alternator receipt I found. I have a few guesses on what it could be but they are just guesses. I'm hoping somebody has had a similar problem. Thanks

My car is a 1994 camaro with a 5spd manual

Sounds like a problem in the ignition system. Could be either the coils or the wires. How long since your last tune up?

Its been since early fall, I replaced the wires and plugs. The wires, I'm embarassed to say, were put in replacement flex tube just like the original, except for heat tolerance. Doh! Consequently the black flex tube melted onto the wires themselves. But its been running fine like that. Is there any way to check the coils before replacing them?

You can test them, but I don't have the instructions here. You can get the printout at any Autozone though.
