  • Getting faster than 14.71@ 97.36...

A friend of mine who has an RSX type S has modded his car to run a 14.71. It's not bad but a bit ricey. The thing is I wanna be faster. We are both very competitve and love making our not that fast cars faster. Having a 3.4L is a rough road to get there. I've decided since my car is a '95, has 140k on the clock, and I'm working on a college budget I don't want a cam or boost. Since I've owned it I've kept it tuned and clean from what it was. My current work on her is the suspension and fine tuning. Here's my mod list:

K&N fipk, P&P TB, TB spacer, TB coolant bypass, 160* thermo, catco cat, flowmaster 80 cat-back, zexel lsd, poly tranny mount, royal purple oil and diff fluid, ls1 brakes, taylor wires, ac delco rapidfire plugs, lakewood lcas, BMR stb, kuhmo asxs, 1 piece driveshaft

I've never ran my car on the track nor dynoed simply because I am afraid of the results (ignorance is bliss).I think headers would be probably the next best route to making her a bit quicker throughout the powerband. What would some suggestions be on getting to that time. Thanks.

Brett, I'd guess 15.8 or 15.9 with your current mods. Unfortunately, in order to get into the 14's I think you're either going to have to go with cam/head work or some kind of power adder. To get better than 14.7 naturally aspirated is definitely going to require engine work.

With 140,000 miles on the engine, the cam lobes HAVE to be ground down quite a bit from the flat tappet lifters. When I took my stock cam out, some of the lobes were producing VERY minimal lift which obviously hurts performance. Even though you wanted to stay away from a cam, a small cam would be very beneficial to restore the engine's lost power and you could still keep it streetable for a daily driver without other major modifications. The Lunati cam is a great example of what I am talking about. It's not anything too major, but slightly larger than stock.

headers would be a good start.. maybe trying a chip... aluminum driveshaft will help you a bit.. i assume u have a 1 piece steel? Yeah, a mild cam won't hurt any.. and will multiply all the mods you have now.. u may also want to try a torque converter

You guys also failed to tell him that his friend is trapping at 97mph, which is extremely fast for a 14.7. If you friend hooked on slicks, he would be at something near a 14 flat.

To reach 14 flat (or trap near 97mph)in a 3.4, you need an act of god n/a, or some kind of FI/spray
