  • I became a victim of the bad fuel gauge readings!!

So I just got this firebird and found out the gas gauge doesnt read accurately. I see on these forums now how common a problem it really is. Wish i would have known this or atleast the guy i bought it from could have mentioned it to me. thats ok, i practically stole it from him pricewise!

So at over a quarter of a tank showing i run out of gas and cost me 50 bucks for a tow cause i didnt think the gas tank was empty. thanks GM for the great defect!

So, am i to replace the fuel sender unit inside the tank and it will cure the gauge readings? If so, i am changing the fuel pump while i am in there. actually am considering going in from the top cutout method. sounds like fun. the normal way, well it dont sound fun. ill figure a way to keep the gas smell from coming inside the car thru the cutout. but what difference does it make, i am now carrying around a 5 gallon gas can in my trunk in case i run out of gas again.

How far do you drive that you have to carry an extra 5 gallons? Do you guys not have any gas stations around there? If you worryed about gas smell the 5 gallon gas can will be filling your car with fumes, open a door, make a spark, car goes boom.

Well, once you get you gauge fixed, you should know that this is the scenario for a perfectly working gauge. Our fuel tanks are shaped like a V, so therefore, when you fill up, It'll stay on full for quite awhile. But, once you see the needle hit the half-tank mark, you have more like 1/3 tank full, or about 5-6 gallons. When the needle hits the 1/4 tank mark, you have about 2-3 gallons left, less than 1/4 tank.
