As far as I can tell the modern 3800II is a stronger engine in design(block) than the old 3.8 GN motor. The "stage" motors are different racing versions of the 3.8GN motor and are much stronger than the stock engine.

An unknown between the two is the fact that the 3800 engine is even-fire and the 3.8 is odd-fire. What I was told that the 3.8 has a journal for each rod while the 3800 has 2 of the 6 rods on the same journal to make it even-fire and smoother. It may mean the crank in the 3800 motors will break before the 3.8, but nobody has taken the 3800 to those levels yet.

Acually the old 3.8 was odd-fire till about 80-81, then they went to even fire. Also both the 3.8 and the 3800 ultlize the same crank as far as design goes, they both have 2 rods riding on the same journal. The 3800 used a blanced shaft in the lifter vally to help somooth out the 90 degree V6 shutters.

Thanks for all the info guys.I'm learning alot about the 3.8's.
BUT where does the GN get all the tourk(sp?) from?
Would just the turbo and inter cooler add that much?
      360~over 400ft/lbs thats V8 power.

if you could make your motor flow that much air, and supply it with enough fuel, which i seriously doubt, then yes you vehicle would make that kind of power. i beleive that the seriesII blocks are weaker. i mean look at the timeslips on turbobuick.com vs ours, and im not saying our engines are not strong, but i am saying that alot most of the gns online are claiming 11secs, man7y are claiming 10 few are claming 9's and fewer are in 8's and 7's range
        http://gnttype.org/members/times.html
the top 4 guys have made 7 sec passes at over 170.
if that dosent scream stronger then what does. there obviously is a huge difference in strength. show me a seriesII running even in the 10 sec range. or 11sec. ;)

How about a turbo charged series II that runs 11s in a fwd configuration? That could be 10s if rwd.

            how bout it?

            whos car?
is it a gtp, cause those things can really fly.

i got a question wouldn't the car run slower due to loss of power cause of the driveline isnt that like 20 or 30% and cause maros are light in the tail section? i know nuthin about front wheel drive vehicles. but for a turbo series II thats admirable.

              over at http://www.intense-racing.com

GTPs may fly, but their tourque curve is attainable (for a price)...also, keep in mind they are heavier. And fwd configuration in not good for drag racing; if you take 2 engines with the same specs, on in fwd, the other rwd, the rwd will win (barring driver error). Not to mention that fwd trannies tend to break after a few high power passes.

well thats one fast gtp but isnt their block different from ours?

thats prolly a whole nuther topic but the gtps are incredible too.

as for the grand national block, to answer wheelers question i would guess for people to be running soo much power outta a gn block i wuold guess a whole butt load of things are different about the 2 blocks im not tooo very familiar with our block but ive had the national block apart a few too many times. soo if you got some gn questions let me know. btw theres a guy putting a gn block in a z. but he's twin turboing that sucker he goes by the name of jc93z on turbobuick.com hes got a webpage of the buildup on this vast epansion we call the internet but the site escapes me right now. ill get back to you on that ifya want. lol good luck on someone answering your question, i dont know if we have or not. :D
