well if you get a fan switch...wouldnt that defeat the purpose of gettin a thermo?
i mean, im not too "expert" on this, but with a fan switch you could just keep it as cool as you want by just flipping it on or off. hence, no need for a thermo to help.
someone correct me if im wrong...which i might be.1992 Camaro RS
Performance: K/N filter and custom CAI
Stereo/Electronics: 10\" Kicker Subwoofers, DEHP-4400 Pioneer Head Unit
Maintenance: New brake lines, New transmission mount
Upcoming: Flowmaster American Thunder Catback, Catco Catalytic Converter

Well thats what Im going to do Correct you, since you're wrong.
The thermostat controls the minimum temperature where the water begins to flow from the engine circuit through the radiator circuit allowing it to cool off. If the radiator, as ours is, is too small for the given outside temperature and CFM of air flowing through it, the radiator will merely slow the temperature rise until it reaches heat output to heat irradiaded equilibrium... On a hot 80F day, if the fans never came on, this could be 220F or more... This is what the fans are for.
If I have a 180F thermo, and I run the fans continuously, the lowest POSSIBLE temp is 180F before the thermostat closes to keep the engine at this temperature --- or higher.
If I get a 160F thermo, and I do the same thing, the lowest possible temp is now 160F. If the radiator is capable of dissipating all the heat of the engine, it will run near 160F. If the radiator can only dissipate some of the heat, it will reach a higher equilibrium temp, and this is why even with a 160F thermo, your engine might run 200F due to lack of wind, improper coolant mixture, or too small/inefficient radiator.
Ways to cool your car off:
1) A big efficient well made radiator
2) A low temp thermostat
3) Lots and lots of wind, preferably cooler temp wind.
Fan switch = man made wind, and it makes up for our itsy bitsy radiator .2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

From working on the SC kit... here is what i learned.
The PCM is tuned to turn the fans on at 195 degress... since that is what our stock stat is at.
The stock stat opens up at 195. The fans kick in to keep the coolant cool as it runs through the engine.
IF you go to a 160 stat, your opening it up at 160, letting the coolant run through, but the pcm is still tuned to turn the fans at 195. So till the tem reaches 195, the engine is getting warmer coolant running through it.
Getting the fan mod will help in that it will keep the fans on at all times (if you cant get the PCM tuning)
Still, what DOM said is correct. If you want to get the engine to run cooler you should do what he says there.- Ryan
A.K.A BATMAN
\"Be part of the solution...
Not the problem\"

I'm pretty sure the fans turn on at (low) 210 and (high) 225 with the 195 thermostat. I know the fans are definitely not programmed to come on at the temp of the thermo b/c that would cause them to be on almost all the time.
That being said, while you're driving, you'll be fine, but once you slow down (or in really really hot weather driving), you'll need something to turn on the fans earlier or the lower temp thermo will do no good. The best thing is to get programming, but if not available, then the second best thing is a manual fan switch.

Yeah but man, its nothing like the high's The A/C fans aren't bad but the high's can bring her down to 165F and hold it for racing/staging. :D2002 5-spd NBM Camaro
