  • Intermittent a/c problem

    This is a strange one.

Went to the GREAT Ontario Camaro Nationals this weekend (took my girlfriend and her daughter). On the way up there (from Pittsburgh, PA) the a/c was working great until I got up to around Erie, PA (about 120 miles from home) and it stopped blowing cold. In fact, it was blowing warm air. I kept alternating between vent and a/c the rest of the trip (with the dial at max cold) but it made no difference. On either A/C setting it would only blow warm air.

Here's where it gets weird. After the car would sit for a few hours, I could start the car and the a/c would work for about two or three minutes before it would all of the sudden (not gradually) begin to blow warm air.

Since I arrived back home I took the car on two short trips each about ten minutes long and the a/c worked fine the entire trip both times.

I feel funny taking it to the dealer because it now appears to be working and they'll probably tell me that all is working fine.

Has anyone else had this same experience and, if so, what was the problem?

With it being so new, it would be adviseable to have a pressure check done and a compressor check done on the A/C system by your dealer.

It might be that your system is low on freon and needs to be recharged - or the pump could be locking up for some odd reason.

Just a quick correction to what Dominic said it wouldn't be freon it would be the rj-134a refrigerant, same thing as freon except it doesn't harm the environment. Not trying to be a smar a** or anything but I just wanted to let you have the correct info.

right near the refridgerant container, there's a pressure sensitive switch (open when pressure is good, closes when pressure gets low) Check the wires coming off this switch, and the socket they plug into.

these activate your ac compressor and it sounds like your compressor isn't starting once your car warms up...

It's either that pressure switch or your compressor is overheating. It shuts down on it's own when that happens.
