replacing entire driverside door

Ive got a 97 Firebird

Can someone give me instructions on how to replace an entire door? I was a fool today and backed up my car with the door open and compelty bent the door the wrong direction, now when i try to open it, it drops about 2 inches and wont open more than 10 inches. I can get it to shut by lifting up on it and slammin it on the lock. Im sure this cant be good for the mechanism

The fiberglass is all tore up as well. Its getting caught on the front fender when I try to force it open and id rather not have that fender get ruined as well.

For now Ill keep jumping through the passenger side. Thanks for the help [img]smile.gif[/img]

The online Gm service opperations site only goes back to 98 with detail, but it should be the same for the 97s. Door Replacement
Removal Procedure
Remove front side door trim. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Door .
Remove water deflector. Refer to Water Deflector Replacement - Door .



Remove electrical connectors from all components in door.
Remove wiring harness grommet (3) from door (1).
Remove crosscar and front side door wiring harness from door.
Remove door spring.
Support door in preparation for door removal.
Remove upper (2) and lower hinge nuts (4).
Remove door from vehicle.
Installation Procedure




Install door to upper and lower hinges.
Install upper (2) and lower hinge nuts (4). Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

Install door spring.
Install crosscar and front side door wiring harness from door.
Install wiring harness grommet (3) from door (1).
Install electrical connectors from all components in door.
Install water deflector. Refer to Water Deflector Replacement - Door .
Install front side door trim. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Door .

Trim Panel Replacement - Door
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 38778 Door Trim Pad and Garnish Clip Remover





Remove the accessory switch panel.
Remove the inside handle bezel. Refer to Handle Bezel Replacement - Inside.
Remove the window regulator handle and spacer, if equipped.
Remove the outside rearview mirror bezel. Refer to Mirror Replacement .
Remove the side door armrest bolts (2).

Important
To avoid breaking the trim panel fasteners be sure to insert the J 38778 between the male fastener which is attached to the door trim panel and the female retainer which is in the door. Do not insert the J 38778 between the female retainer and the door.


Remove the front side door trim from the door inner panel.
Pull the side door trim up from the door, making sure the hooks release from the holes in the door inner.
Disconnect the door speaker electrical connectors.
Remove the courtesy lamp socket from the door trim.
Installation Procedure




Install the courtesy lamp socket to the door trim.
Connect the door speaker electrical connectors.
Pull the side door trim up from the door, making sure the hooks release from the holes in the door inner.
Install the front side door trim to the door inner panel.
Install the side door armrest bolts (2). Tighten
Tighten the side door armrest bolts to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).

Install the outside rearview mirror bezel. Refer to Mirror Replacement .
Install the window regulator handle and spacer, if equipped.
Install the inside handle bezel. Refer to Handle Bezel Replacement - Inside.
Install the accessory switch panel.

Water Deflector Replacement - Door
Removal Procedure
Remove the door trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Door .



Peel the water deflector (2) from the door inner panel.
Installation Procedure




Peel the backing paper from the adhesive on the new deflector.
Position the deflector over the large opening in the door.
Beginning at the bottom of the water deflector (2) press firmly to secure the adhesive (1).
Install the door trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Door .
