That wouldn't surprise me a bit. I was talking to a guy who did some work on my car (certified mechanic), and he said the bureau of automotive repair (California) is basically a mafia when it comes to licensing. If you want to get your licence from them (which are required to have in order to run a shop), you have to take their tests, abide by their rules, and buy their posters at several hundred dollars a piece.
In addition, they can pretty much shut your shop down whenever, and for whatever reason, they want, and there's not a whole lot a shop owner can do about it.
Anyways, getting more to the point, he was saying that the dealerships (and auto makers) won't give up a lot of their fault code info out to independent shops. They give out the basics, so that a shop could say that it was a certain area in the engine or transmission, but that the dealerships are able to use codes to trace problems to an individual part, and that's what they don't give out.
The state bureau protects them with this, and I'm sure the thing with Kragen is the same deal, dealerships and everybody were making money for charging for scanning codes, and Kragens put a crimp in their business.
Wife and a dog, they both think they\'re Kujo.<br /> <br />1999 3.8 A4 Y87<br />Navy Blue Metallic<br />BFG G-Force KDWS 275/40/17s, <br />WS6 Wheels (17x9)<br />Phoenix Transmissions 2400 Stall Converter<br />FRA, Holley Powershot filter, Whisper Lid, Ported Throttlebody<br />2000 manifolds, Flowmaster, WS6 Tail Pipes, <br />MSD 8.5mm Wires, MSD Coils, Autolite plugs<br />Performance Cryogenics treated rotors<br />1LE Sway Bars and panhard rod, 1LE front springs w/SLP Bilsteins, stock rear springs w/ 3rd Gen Bilsteins, BMR STB, KBDD SFCs, 1LE rear lower control arms, 1LE front lower control arms<p>1968 Chevelle Malibu 327 TH350
WHO CARES if they offer free code scanning.... its a service, so they can SELL more parts..
The dealers can complain, that they don't get to charge $60-80 for a code scan... But its called FREE ENTERPRISE system..
Or did california forget about that?
Can you still buy code scanners in california? Or are those restricted sales too?
