so i was checking the fuses in the engine bay, and my air pump fuse was blown, so i changed it, my question is what is the air pump, (i know its under the air intake, behind the radiator, connected to the air intake), what does it do. and also, i have a loose wire down there, pretty short, really thin, which isn't connected to anything, but i think it has something to do with the air pump
Back in the early emission days, the major auto manufactorers forced fresh air into the exhaust stream by means of an air pump. This provided oxygen for a more complete burn after combustion. Some also forced air into the cat prevent the formation of carbon monoxide and to cool the second section of the cat to help break down NOx emissions.
As for our cars, I'm not sure if they still run air pumps...but I saw that fuse once too.

pvtschultz is correct.
The air pump runs at startup to help with a better burn before the engine is warmed up (helps the cats work more efficiently too at that time). After warm-up, the air pump turns off. It's basically to help cold start emissions.
