Question - transverse or not?

I feel rather ignorant asking this question, but I'm having my plugs and wires changed tomorrow and there's like a $30 difference between transverse and non-transverse and somehow I don't remember hearing about this issue. Can someone enlighten me please? Also, most places don't want to do the work if I provide the parts, so I'm going to have them change plugs, and then I'll put my wires on, how hard should I expect that to be? Thanks guys.

This probably refers to transverse mounted motors, IE front wheel drive. I suppose they charge more of they have to go behind themotor to change the plugs in a transverse mounted. So you dont have to worry abouit that, your motor is not transverse mounted. Depending on the year ofyour car, changing wires can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Why not just change the plugs yourself??? Whats teh charge for the change anyways?

Don’t quote me on this but I think transverse/non-transverse is if a motor is sideways or not.

I think a transverse four is a sideways 4, just as a newer grand prix would be a transverse V6....I think.

So you would have a non-transverse motor.

Plugs and wires are easy to change.

The trick is to do one wire at a time.

I thought the general consensus was that plugs were a real pain to change on our cars... In answer to your question, it'll cost about $90 parts/labor... I've never changed any set of plugs or wires before. What should/do I need and how much of an "experience" is it?

No, no, no! Get a shop to do a tune up for you. Most shops charge around at most $40-50. Get them to do all the hard work. Then when they're done just change the wires yourself.

I got my local Firestone to do this for me. They wanted like $130 just to change the plugs and wires [img]graemlins/rofl.gif[/img] I said, "how much is just a tune-up?" Got the much cheaper tune-up, and changed the wires myself in 30 minutes. I can just imagine the things the mechanic was cursing when was changing the plugs [img]graemlins/rofl.gif[/img]

I give changing the plugs in a pre-99 3.8L a PITA factor of 7 out of 10.

it really isn't that hard to change the plugs and wires if you are patient and don't mind loosing about a pint of blood. But if you have never done it before, watch someone that has before you attempt it. The wires...just do one at a time so you don't get any confused and you will be ok. Be careful how you pull them off, sometimes the ends stick to the plugs and if you pull on the wires from the wrong spot, you'll pull the connector loose from the wire.
