I went to get safety and emmissions done today. Car passed beuitifully, Gas cap didnt. He said the cap wouldnt hold pressure. So I went to my local Autozone, they game me the wrong cap. Returned it and they said they didnt have the correct one. Checked Checker AUto, Didnt carry the correct cap. Checked my local NAPA didnt carry the correct cap. Called a dealer, out of stock, called another dealer out of stock, So I had to order one from a dealer and now I have to wait about 3 days to get it. All over a simple gas cap. Is there any way around this? I have confirmed the gas cap changed in 98+ vehicles. But why is it so hard to get one? I am half tempted to steal one off a parked car.

Yeah the 98's use oddball style gascaps and theyre difficult to find. If your gascap isnt holding pressure, well thats good you found out now :D2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

They pressure test the caps with a hand held pump. Looks kinda like a pump for a soccerball with a gauge on it. They screw in the cap and then pump to see what kind of pressure the cap can hold. The seals go on them, which allows leaks, I guess the fumes from the tank could escape. And not holding pressure may effect the performance of the system? The seals on some aftermarket caps don't hold up like factory pieces do. I had a similar problem where my locking cap failed the safety inspection. You could see all the cracks in the seal. Went home and got the old OEM one, which had been sitting on the shelf for 2 years. That one passed with flying colors.
