  • Where is mileage stored?

I am gonna put in a z28 instrument panel. The guy selling it says it has about 66K miles on it. I thought mileage was stored in the cars onboard computer? Is there a little chip in the panel that remembers mileage?

If I put in the panel, will it show my cars actual mileage or that of the previous car it was in?

It's stored in the instrument panel.

I believe it's stored in the instrument cluster AND in the cars PCM.

I believe PCM keeps track of the tripodometer, that's why when you reset the PCM, you lose the tripodometer reading but not the odometer reading .

The PCM also keeps a records total milage, even if you don't have a digital odometer gauge.

I think that the 93-96's just have the odometer to keep track of the mileage. The 97+ have digital odometer's, and the PCM keeps track of it.
            Not sure though

Correct...and the tripometer is reset because the gauge lost power as well. Autotap will tell you the miles stored in the PCM I believe.

In my '96, I can use AutoTap to see what the PCM believes the milage is. It is a little bit diffrent than when my (analog looking) odometer says on the dash. Resetting the PCM does not clear this number.

I have a 1999 model. I asked because I am concerned that when I install a different instrument panel, the differing mileage discepancy will throw a code or somehow piss of the computer. I want to make sure it will work before I buy the panel.
