  • Yet another misfire mystery...

So today my car starts to misfire. I look at the plugs, the wires and everything and nothing seems wrong. The only things maintenence wise I haven't replaced are the o2 sensors in the headers and the PCV valve. The car lopes at idle, not too badly though. Under acceleration it doesn't misfire but when you are just cruising is when you notice it and sometimes it makes a nice loud POW! Just started today. I would say bad gas but I've been on the same tank of gas for about a week now. A camaro got pulled over infront of me on my way home from dropping my g/f off and I was sitting behind them (they took up the whole road like idiots) loud and popping, lol. Don't know what it could be, maybe bad coils? Bad injector? Not sure! Anyone? HELP!

When did you change the plugs/wires? Fuel filter?

    Getting a flashing/steady SES?

No SES at all. I changed the fuel filter, plugs and wires (now msd wires) about 3k miles ago.

Honestly, I always change plugs/wires with a misfire...even if I changed them just a few thousand miles ago.

Besides that, I'd try running some fuel injector cleaner and fill up with some good premium gas.

If it was a coil, you probably would be getting an SES because the engine would be down 2 cylinders.

I'm really surprised there is no SES, then again when I had no o2 sensor after the S-pipe before it was about 50 miles before it came on so that may be the case. I guess I'll drive around a bit tomorrow and see.

It could be the cat, if it is rpm specific, a fuel, or spark misfire would be much more persistant, also that pop sounds like a definate cat induced misfire all that is, is cold air rushing into the exhaust pipes after you accelerate and expanding rapidly due to the heat of the pipes, that is caused by high backpressure i.e. the cat. unless of course if you don't have a cat in which case disregard this post.

No it's not the cat, it ran pretty good today, still no SES and not nearly as much misfire and no loud pops. May have just been something in the gas.
