  • Why does my car acceleration jerk at 50-60 mph?

    Hi All:

Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this problem. Have a 99 camaro with 150k miles on it. Never had any problems. Been keeping up maintenance which just included new wires new plugs new pcv new fuel filter, etc.

On the freeways when I am driving and as soon as I hit 50 mph and lightly hit the accelerator the acceleration starts to jerk the car until it gets to 60mph and than stops. If you step on the gas than u don't feel it it just accelerates so only happens as your lighly accelerating. Weird eh? No SES code ever nothing. Just wondering why that happens.

    Thanks
    Mak

do the newer camaro's have coil packs???

if it's a distributor then it could very well be the cap, i've had the same problem before due to heavy buildup... it was wierd how it only happened in a certain RPM range and wouldn't do it for hours sometimes... but then the damn thing would just nearly die out of nowhere

Would a bad coil pack not make the car jerk anytime u accelerate vs. a speed range. thats interested. i guess i can try to replace the coil packs have never changed them.

No, a coil pack wouldn't do that, and that's why I asked if the 4th Gen's had them.

When a coil pack is out, it's out... You would just lose two cylinders, not intermittent firing like your car seems to be doing.

I bet you have an Automatic 4 speed tranny. I bet you are in DRIVE when it happens, but more importantly I bet you are at about 1800 rpm and not accelerating hard. if so it is someting with the torque converter I believe.

My car does it too. it only has 12,000 miles on it. It has done forever. I actually want to get a lower stall torque converter because of the curent mods on the car. Basicaly the car has a lot more power even at low rpms so while daily driving I am often at lower rpms than I used to be before the mods. This puts the car in the torque converter/stall threshold more often. I don't drag race as a pro nor as a hobbiest with this car. I just like to drive a fast car.

Try driving just in 3rd gear and keep the rpms above 2100 or so as a test. This might be what it is.
I am curious like you...but I think it is the relativly high stall speed of the stock torque converter. (a cool thing, mind you...)
Stall is about 1800 or so. I think that is highere than some stock torque converters.

Tranny gurus, please don't trash me if I am wrong but shed light if needed. thanks.
