  • If it isn't one thing, its another!

Its as if my car can never give me a couple of months of worry-free driving without something else going out.

I went to go the grocery store when I notice whenever I turn, I can hear a very soft, feathery squeeling. I honestly don't know what its coming from but I'm guessing the power steering since it only happens when I turn (or so I can tell so far).

I had the power steering pump resealed because it was leaking around 5-6 months ago and had the power steering pump hose replaced too.

ARGH...I'd trade this car in but I owe $8,000 and the blue book with all the miles is probably less than that.

MORE INFO: No leaks on the floor...and the soft sound is coming from the engine.

Hey whats up, I have a '96 and i've been fixing odds and ends for about a year now. You got to remember it's a '96. So it was built in late 95. So in late 2002 it will almost be 7 years old. The problems with my car made me want to trade mine so bad. But if you think about it man, your going to have problems with anycar. If it's costing you money start checking things out yourself. I've spent so much time underneath my car and did so much preventive maintenance. Hardly anything breaks now. And it barely costed me much because I did most myself. Rather then western auto or pepboys charging me a few hundred to tighten up some hoses or add some sealing junk into stuff. Spend some time on these boards in checking what usually goes wrong on older cars. And start checking things out.

I fixed my leaky power steering by replacing it with a manual steering rack and delete the power steering unit :D

When the internal parts on the power steering pump go out, it will squeal. When the do go out, you will not necessarily have a leak. Take your PS resevoir cap off while the engine is running and look at the fluid. If it has a milky, discolored look or seems to be boiling, you should replace the pump. Should solve your problems.

Well it doesn't give that soft squeel when the car is cold...I starter the car this morning and it didn't squeel. After some freeway driving, as I turned off the freeway, it made the noise.

I'll have to check out the color of it later and post back here.

brakes do get hot and cold. id check that first. we just did epics brakes cause they were doing the same thing. whenever he turned to the right they squaked. and when my rear bakes went, they would be quite 90% of the time, and then just be flat out LOUD when i was on the brakes. get your rotors cut at pepboys or something, its like 6 a rotor, WELL worth it.

Hmmm...so I guess its either the PS or the brakes. When the car was cold, it didn't make the noise. It was after I drove around, yesterday around town and today on the freeway, that it started making the noise. The noise is very quiet...I might have had it for a while but never heard it with the radio. It does make the noise turning right and left though...but again, not when cold.

I haven't had the brakes looked at in a while...maybe I'll take it in on a weekend for a free check-up at one of these local places.

P.S. Brakes don't make any noise when I brake at all.

Okay, well I sort of have a little more info to help out.

You know cars that when they first start up they make a noise when a belt is going bad...that sort of shreeky noise...thats the noise the car makes when I turn except VERY quiet. It doesn't do it any other time...only when I turn and only when the car is warmed up.

I looked at the PS fluid...looks the same color with the car on and off. I used a straw to remove maybe an inch of it and then replaced it with fresh fluid. Didn't help but I got to see the PS fluid is a light brown color.
