  • omg what have i done, MAF sensor

well today i decided to take my throttle body and polish it and remove that stupid pillar, my dad suggested... so anyway i took it off and cut the pillar all the way out cept little nubs that i smoothed and sanded and polished all nice and smooth well i put the MAF sensor back in and I NEVER touched the little doohickie, i put it all back on and crunk it up, well i got what i wanted... more power.. i can barely tap the gas and it spins my back tire easy, BUT there is a LOUD A** WHISTLE coming from the black little MAF sensor box thing... WHAT DID I DO?! i probably messed it up because i cut ALL the pillar and removed that brass lookin plate... but there is no putting it back  did i mention how much more responsive it feels it just gulfs air in now...

hopefully, there won't be a SES light to follow. I have an extra 96 3.8 TB (complete with sensors) that I bought, cleaned, polished, and painted that I'm saving for an insurance backup for something like this. I was planning on experimenting with the MAF, but I think you're experience will change my mind. The power sounds good, but I really don't want to hear a whistle as I'm driving...

NO NO NO do do it! I made a mistake! it's not the MAF Sensor it was my gasket leaking... so i tightened the bolts and it stopped but its BARELY there i also sprayed some brake cleaner on the gasket and it made my engine studder... so anyway its not the maf sensor doing it and yes its got better power at higher speeds its still pulling pretty good... i only wish i had done this before last night so i could have made a better time at the track...

Removing MAF will not yield any perfomance. It might actually hurt it. The screen is to stabilize the airflow.

Umm...no where in his post did he say anything about removing the MAF or the MAF screen...

I ripped the whole thing apart, and started with just the TB frame, then I cleaned it, polished the inside, and then painted it with high temp paint.

Hold up, I want to learn how to do this.

What is this 'pillar'? And how is it removed?

I took mine off this afternoon, and examined it. The TB plate and behind was nothing but BLACK THICK GUK, which I immediately removed with a knife-blade, then polished off with EagleOne Mag Polish. As if all that sh*t was going into my engine. Eugh. I see the 'pillar' you're talking about, but to be perfectly honest, I'm sh*t-scared of damaging that little MAF sensor above the pillar. What if debris from sawing and grinding the pillar gets in there and damages the element? Then I'm screwed... I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the actual part of the intake from which the pillar is removed, before and after, just so I have something to base my work off of, so I'm not f*cking anything up.

sure thats fine i can take a picture when i get home from work later... i unscrewed the two screws holding the maf sensor on the outside of the TB and just pulled it out and i removed the other throttle sensor and soaked the whole TB in laquer thinner... and then i took out the pillar almost all of it, i then sanded it smooth inside and i took one of those metal scrub things you scrub dishes with the little pad thing and scrubbed it inside and out, now its like shiny up to a dirty intake manifold, next to scrub and clean my intake manifold :D but yes i will post up some pics...

EDIT: OH YA you guys have got to see the air induction holes i fabricated in the nose of my car! the air just goes thru the hole and bam is in the area where my filter is and i put one on the other side to match it... i'll post the pics of that too, i have to do some touching up with some mesh grill and seal along the edges to make it look factory...

I actually have a .pdf that I downloaded a while back describing the steps needed to port and polish your throttle body.
I really cannot remember what the website was that I got it from, but a Matthew Rothwell created this very informative document (please don't sue me for perjury).

If you want it, shoot me an e-mail. Please make sure that you add a subject line of Throttle body or something to that effect so that I don't delete the e-mail.
