10w30 will destroy my engine???

my dad called one car mechanic and the mechanic said that 10w30 dino is too thin for lubricate for my firebird"s 92 v6 engine.and it will destroy the engine, and that 10w40 would be better to use. my engine has over 112500 miles on it.it consumes oil after 2500 miles about half quart. i have used 10w40 before but my engine start to knock,(i dont know why) and when i use 5w30 or 10w30,knocking noise goes away a bit. will 10w30 destroy my engine?? :(
have you guys driven with 10w30 or 5w30 dino oils when mileage is about 112500 or over?? thanks. [img]graemlins/burnout.gif[/img]

I use 10-40, but 10-30 is almost the same thing. GM recommends 10-30. 10-30 or 5-30 will provide better lubercation in cold weather. If you have knocking with 10-40 and no knocking with 10-30, you car is telling you it wants 10-30. Your mechanic is an idiot, or a young know it all kid. And after 2500 most all, even brand new engine consume half a quart. To anwser your question id recommed 10-30, maybe even 5w30, depending on how cold it is. The only thing is if you use 5w30 your car may use a LITTLE bit more then half a quart after 2500 miles.

That mechanic has no clue. You're worrying too much about it again...

I know of a guy that, to prove a point, ran a 5W-20 synthetic in a Ferrari. He tested the oil repeatedly, and had absolutely no problems with it. I think that car was spec'd for something like 5w-50 oil.

im running 5w30 in my car right now.

your mechanic is an idiot, 10w30 is perfectly fine, is not, maby a little too thick (for my standards acually)

In all actuality you shouldn't be running 10w40 unless your oil pressure is running low! So if your pressure is fine 10w40 van blow all your damn seals. 5w30 is great for cold weather because it runs a little thinner at low temperatures, I like to run 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer. But as long as your pressure is good I mean feel free to run even 0w30... No worries man, sounds like you might have a mechanic that wants to make $500 off replaceing your gaskets...
