    94 firebird 3.4 v6 auto

    misfire and or hesitation problems.

this is the car my friend Jairus got for $1160

car ran like crap got it home replaced plug wires, alternator and punched out cat. now it runs alright but still stutteres and hesitates.

if you punch it it will leave a some fuel sprayed rocks behind the car. it runs REALLY RICH. I havent changed the plugs yet but will today and will keep you informed.

the car makes power throughout rpms, but hesitates throughout rpms and doesnt like to bog below 2 grand. the SES light comes on alot and turns off alot but the car runs better while the SES light is on like it is going into limp mode or something.

i had it computer checked and it said the map sensor was messing up. instead of paying a guy $60 to see if it was the map sensor or not i bought one for $46 and the car still runs like crap.

the car runs better cold and the more you drive it the worse it gets. park it for the night and it does ok (only ok) until you drive it some more.

my mechanic friend said the o2s were ok. my wires are brand new and the cat is hollowed out, my only thought now is the plugs, but i dunno for sure.

has anyone had this problem or ? keep in mind the limp modes SES light thing. thanks in advance guys

Should've paid to have it checked. THere might have been a wiring short or something discovered.

Fuel sprayed rocks behind huh?, IF the cat was still working, it might have looked something like THIS the TPS was WAY off.

i changed the plugs in the car but the SES light is still on. i drove it and it runs alittle better and doesnt die at idle, but i could only drive it for a few minutes because I had to leave to go to houston texas.

my mechanic friend hooked it up to the computer and it said the map sensor was messing up. either that or vacuum leaks somewhere? do you think since the egr valve is melted and unpluged that that would mess up the vacuum or make it run so rich???

still wanting to know if anyone has an extra egr laying around, havent check for gas in the oil put I thought about just changing it again, only $4 for cheap oil. when i gett it runing good then I will put good oil in it.

my biggest curiousity is when the SES light isnt on it ran worse, but when it came on it ran better like it was in a limp mode or something. almost like if something is giving a crappy reading the computer has a default that will make sure the car at least runs decent, not sure though

when the engine is cold it will be running in open-loop mode. typically this means its going to ignore the sensors and go by some pre-programmed values until the engine gets warm. at that point it switches over and starts using the o2/maf/manifold pressure/coolant temp/throttle position to control fuel mixture.

if the car sets an ses it might pull timing. what code is the car showing when it sets the ses. is it a misfire or sensor related?

the mechanic said that the map sensor was giving like too low or too high of readings that when he unplugged it it gave the opposite readings or something. I replaced it for $46 bucks instead of having the mechanic figure out if it was it or not for $60 and then trying to charge me $82 for a new one. I changed the plugs like I said and it runs better but now the only thing i can think of is the MAF. not sure though.

I personally like an edelbrock intake & carb and a one wire HEI. doesnt get more simple than that.....sensor what??

is there a way you can get your engine to stay in open loop mode, i know mileage would go down a bit but to have a switch that would turn that on would be cool. there is a significant amount of power incread in open loop mode. i dunno just a thought.

oh and for 3.4 deployed i would probably still have the cat on there if the front section of screening didnt get hit by the previous owner and plug up the rest of the screening. power over 3400 rpms yeah right. oh and goodbye egr servos

replacing a sensor doesnt mean its going to work right. the map could have a bad connection to the pcm. with the new map in place are you getting reasonable readings?

havent checked since i have changed it but i will as soon as I get back to washington.

the oil sensor does always say low oil, but I found out it is just a wire connection because after I changed the oil it still came on and continues to go on and off. the clip that keeps the map sensor wire plugged in was broken so maybe me an scooby doo and doo some investigation and see if thats the problem. uhhh how do I check that.
