I have a problem with my 99 trans am. When I put the key into the ignition the key turns but the engine wont turn. None of the gauges or the warning lights come on, not even the odometer. But the radio turns on, also the headlights and power windows work fine. I tried changing the battery but that didnt help any. Does anyone have any possible solutions for this? thanks in advanced.

Did you check your fuses? Might be blown fuses? I'm also thinking maybe alternator?

Have you checked you're alternator? Does you're car crank?

yeah i checked all the fuses, I dont think is the alternator, cause none of the gauges work, they dont come on when I turn the key, I just hope is not a pcm problem.

The car wont do anything when I turn the key, the only thing it does is turn the radio on. the power windows and mirrors work.

Autozone checks alternators and starters for free.
Starter? I don't think it goes out, just like that, but it can also be checked. Maybe the ignition switch, I had that go out on a cavalier once, the lights would go on the car wouldn't crank for chit, we had to ghetto hot wire it from the starter and it started right up, I don't suggest doing that thought.

No lights in dash = not a VATS problem.

Sounds like a PCM problem. Have you messed with that at all?

Headlights, Radios, Windows, Locks are all controlled by the BCM. Starter, Gauges, Etc are controlled by the PCM.

Edit: Do the turn signal lights work on the instrument panel?

Why does everyone always call a PCM problem? here is a rule of thumb. only about 1 of 5000 times will a PCM be a problem and it will NEVER cause a No crank situation (unless it;s a passkey fault)

you need to start simple. first with a volt meter see if you have more then 12 volts at the battery. Then your going to need to make sure that your getting that 12 volts through the cable to the starter and power distribution center.

if all that checks out and your SURE that you have checked all the fuses both inside and out you need to start looking at an ignition switch issue.

I finally got it fix, it was the ignition cylinder, I had to take the steering wheel apart. But finally my car is running without a problem. Thanks for all your suggestions.

What was the problem? you stated that NO lights came on. But what your describing sounds like a broken Wire at the ign tumbler that is a comon cause of a pass key fault.

I followed the instructions at the haynes manual on how to replace a ignition cylinder, the hardest part was being careful not to set off the air bag, but other than that it wasnt a big deal. The part cost like 40 bucks at autozone, and as I stated the problem was the car wouldnt start and also no lights or gauges came on when I turned the key.
