  • Help A Newbie?

    I just bought a 96 Firebird with a 3.8L I have a cold air induction kit and a resistor mod coming. I am using this as a daily driver but want a bit more hp. Any suggestions. I am looking at mods realtively cheap.

    Later may add NOS not too sure if this is wise though for a daily driver.

    Its pretty much stock and has dual exhaust. It has 107000 miles but runs very good.

    Another issue is I think I have a leaky valve cover gasket. After driving as car warm it has a odor. Maybe burnt oil on the exhaust manafolds. Any other causes you can think of besides valve cover gaskets.

      the oil is most likly from your rear main seal,
      search the nos are about that and

      don't do the resistor mod, and you next step is exuast and headers and high flow cat.

          its not wothr it, it just tells the car the air is 45* thats all, if its colder then that you dont get anything out of it.

          you can get more power out of other mods with that money.

            Yeah but if you live in the south (I am in Florida) you do get a decent gain for only 2 bucks. I had mine done before I got the pcm reprogramed

              I live in west texas . The desert ranch land here is a bit hot at times. 100+ days are common so I assume this mod is ok for me?????

                the resistor costs about 10 cents at radioshack. so you overpaid for about a 1 or 2 horsepower gain. still think it was worth it?

                anyway there are a few things you can do cheaply to add a bit of power and make the car overall much better. i'm in the same situation. i bought a flowmaster 80 series muffler on ebay for $45. it didnt add too much power but it made it sound awesome. then the cold air kit, thats a good start. some plug wires and plugs might also help a bit. i'm not sure what your price range is. all that is probably 200-300 dollars for maybe...10 horses???

                  </font>[/QUOTE]Also, don't forget about our self-aware PCM's. Over time the car will adjust timing and fuel to compensate for running lean and you will be right back in the same boat.

                    lets see......hmmmmmm I cant think of too many mods that only cost a dollar per horsepower....can you?

                        nitrous is gonna be your best mod...as long as the engine is in good shape and you use it correctly you should be all good...plenty of guys here run both wet and dry kits on stock engines that are also their daily drivers...i do on mine [img]smile.gif[/img]

                        BTW...if you're thinking of spraying...you can always talk to me or James (or Magnus if you can dig him up..hehe) ..James knows everything there is to know about it...and i myself have been spraying for a few years and have learned a LOT from him in just the past few months...but i definitely recommend any basic NOS kit for wet or dry..and NX, or TNT wet kits
