How do you know for sure when it needs to be replaced. The guy at the oil change place said it needed to be changed. But then a guy at my work said

It has cracks on the ribbed side, but the other side is fine.

What happens if you just let it stay until it squeals? Will it snap?
Change it no later than the owner's manual says and definitely right away if it has cracks. If it snaps lots of stuff stops working (alternator, power steering, etc). It won't hurt anything, but it sure messes up your day if it happens miles away from everything.

Indeed. That not working will cause you some REAL problems. Overheating and worse.
A belt is one of those things that, if it needs to be changed, change it! They are pretty cheap parts (for the most part)and usually don't require much effort to put in. To me its a no-brainer.
