Smoke coming from the steering wheel???

Hi,
Today I was driving around when I noticed a small amount of white smoke slowly coming out of the steering wheel. Well, the first thing I did was turn off the parking lights. After a few seconds, it stopped. Any ideas why this might have happened? I do have a white face gauge, so I am probably thinking I must have a short somewhere, but I have had the white face for a while now. Has this happened to anyone else? Feedback appreaciated. Thanks.

Ok, this is just an idea, but I remember someone telling me that on old 300zx's this was a problem, because grease used in the combo switch got on the contacts and was burning. Which explains why it went away when you turned off your parking lights (because the circuit was opened, thus no more electricity). Don't remember what the fix was on the Z, sorry. Just a noob so anyone feel free to jump in and correct me.
