When everyone posts their gas mileage they get, is this based on normal acceleration (2,600RPM shifts) or heavy acceleration (3,500RPM+ shifts)

I do about 60% of my driving with those 3,500RPM+ area and get between 18 and 21MPG. Most of my driving is done above 60MPH on open suburban roads and the highway. Seeing less than 2,000RPM is rare for me.

BASICALLY I WANT TO KNOW IS IF I'M BURNING MORE GAS THAN I SHOULD?

ahhh....man :(

I was hoping someone would tell me I could get better and there would be some way for me to improve it. I can't stand the amount of gas I'm going through...I can't imagine what would happen if I had a Z28 instead.

99camaro99, I'm getting about the same, about 20mpg, most of my shifts are 3500+, and most driving is about 2500 to 3000 rpm range :D . The thing that bugs me, though, is that no matter what kind of driving I do, i.e., city driving, freeway, different speeds, I am always right at about 20mpg. If I drive freeway and city one day, and then all freeway the next day, I get the same gas mileage. It's goofy.

Well, a little different story here. My mpg does vary depending upon weather and road conditions and whether or not I use the A/C. However, I have never gotten less than 24 mpg or more than 31 mpg. My daily roundtrip commute is 155 miles. About 115 miles of interstate and 40 miles of city driving. Ran an mpg check recently and was getting about 27 with A/C on. On the interstate my tach stays at or just above 3,000. I have a 3.23 rear end - you can do the figuring. Rarely shift below 3,000.

First question, what octan gas are you guys running? I'm running 91 octane (highest we can get here in CA), it makes a noticeable difference compared to 87.
Second question, Red, what all can you do with that HPP3? I've been considering whether to get one, just wondering if it's worth it?
I'm doing about 220 a day roundtrip, I don't use the A/C, but I do go over a 1,000ft pass each way. Still, I went to my in-laws last weekend, and it's pretty much flat, open road all the way (I-5), and my gas mileage was still the same. I'm beginning to wonder if I might be having problems with my tranny, or maybe even my TC.

I'm running 87 because I can't afford the higher octane, plus there's no performance difference (for me at least).

But yea whatever I do, city/highway, it's still between 19 and 22 for me. Oh btw, I never use the A/C, but I do drive w/my windows down all the time (maybe the extra wind resistance is hurting me :D )

octane has no effect on mileage.
placebo effect? consider the possibility that you may be driving much more aggressively when you fill up with higher octane gas for "performance."
check out this link for example: http://www.carjunky.com/news/newtext/40.shtml

also if you had a v8 the mileage would be about the same because you wouldn't have to press the gas pedal as far down or hold it down as long to get the same acceleration as you do with your v6. actually i've heard of light-footed v8 owners getting better city and hwy mileage than many "moderate-footed" v6 owners. just depends on driving style.

edit: check tire pressure. underinflation burns more gas than most people realize. and if you really really are concerned about mileage, get rid of unnecessary weight in the vehicle, like the spare tire, jack, and the back seats. hell, take out the passenger seat too if you drive by yourself mostly

Guardsman, here is a link of the features of an HPP# Features. In addition to changing the timing curve, I like the fact that I can use it to adjust for non-standard tires and rear end ratios.

I've got a 99 Z and I get about 25 - 30mpg. I'm not hard on my car but I don't baby it either. I drive mostly in the city.

What gas are you using anyway?
