  • convertable vs. coupe

    searched, didn't find anything.
i found a good deal on a camaro RS convertable. it's a red '96 with a black top, automatic, and only 59k miles. the body is flawless. the wheels and tires are in good condition too. the dealership was closed so i couldn't see much of the interior, but from the outside it looked to be in very good shape as well. so here's my question:
what's different between the coupe and convertable other than the whole top being different and the weight? is there anything that's "bad" about all the convertables that you don't like?
i'm thinking about selling my car once it's fixed and i could probably trade it in for this car and not have to pay anything. we'll see about that though.

coupe won't twist with your launches as bad as a convertible because they have a hard body all around whereas conv. don't have any support where a coupe would. That's about all I can think of. Suspension upgrades will help with this body twisting though.

Convertables also have a bit more wind noise than a coupe. And also, if you have stuff in your car, and some wants it, all the need is a knife. Another thing to think about. :(

eh... we don't have much crime around here at all. the most crime i've seen the entire time living here (16 years) was the other week when a car wouldn't pull over and he and two cops came flying across the road and cut me off. then another cop came the other way and boxed the guy in. other than that and some underage drinking, we're pretty much crime-free lol. only cars that get broken into are ones with nice sound systems in plain view in dark areas owned by someone that people hate.

well if your ever going to race it. i dont recommened a conv. just the overall weakness of it but suspension parts maybe get you to the stiffness of a coupe.

i'm not planning on racing much. maybe go to the track a few times a year. i'm 16 and jobless at the moment, and i'm not going to be pouring thousands and thousands into the car. just a few mods here and there.

if somebody doesn't give me a real reason not to have a convertable soon, i'm probably going to go with it once my car is fixed lol.

Gotta love SFC's. Also I said I wouldn't mod my car much either, what luck that did. 2 years later and 15,000 plus spent.

I love my convertible. You will need sub fram connectors and a strut tower brace to stop the intense shimmying of the body, but it is fun...AND if it can make a 35 year old bald guy look sexy (according to my wife) so imagine what it can do for a 16 y/o...btw a picture of mine is in the link in my sig.

I have a convertible, third one I have owned. Other than having to replace the top every so often, I prefer the look of the convertible.

that's another thing i didn't think about--replacing the top. how often do you have to replace it?

It would depend on where you live. Out here in the desert the heat is my enemy. I have only owned the car 2 years now, the top was new when I bought the car, so I probably have 2 or 3 years left. When I lived back east, the storms were the problem, hail tore up the tops. I would guess that about every 5 or 6 years would be the average.
