  • knocking/pinging problem

Something BAD is happening to my car since monday night. I noticed when I turn the wheel and get on it, either direction i hear a popping noise and you can feel it in the floorboard. I thought something had come loose like the tranny mount or the exhaust was smacking the floorpan. Put it up on the ramps yesterday and felt around for everything I thought was possible to be loose, and everything was tight.

Well then it started making the popping (sounds like firecrackers going off in a muffled jar or something) under any load, like 3/4 throttle or more, especially WOT. So I was on a back road yesterday and stuck my head out the window and WOT it, sounded like MAJOR knocking or pinging (I don't know the difference) coming from my driver's side, as I heard it clearly. It knocks so hard that it causes a loss of power, like the engine shutters and it shakes the car. I can also feel the popping in my feet. The WOT performance also seems way worse than before.

This is also the same side that has the noisy lifters that clack when you first start the car up after its been sitting for around 45minutes to an hour. So I don't know if its this problem getting worse.

No SES light is getting set which surprises me because I'd expect the P0300 code to get set.

Here is all the things I think it COULD be

    1)Bent pushrod and/or rocker arm
    2)bad lifters
    3)clogged cat

The P0420 code was set around 3 weeks ago for about a day, I took it to autozone and they scanned it. I started the car up the next morning to go to work and the SES light stayed on for about 15 minutes, then turned off and has not been on since. The cat is one of those 3" cheap exhaust shop deals because when my O.E. one got smashed by something, carmax had it replaced when I was under that 30 day free bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Also - I orginally thought it was bad gas, filled up monday, and I've always ran 87 octane gas in the car since I bought it home. So the tank ran out last night and I filled up from a different station with 89 octane. Same problems.

The problem especially pops (passengers say they can feel it in their feet as well) when you start from a dead stop, at anything above 1/4 throttle. When you're rolling on, you have to give it at least 3/4 throttle for it to start its crap. WOT it and it happens everytime, sometimes worse than others.

It also seems that you have to push the gas harder for the tranny to downshift. I don't know if thats my imagination. It SEEMS like the PCM is retarding the timing because of the sound of the car.

The odd thing is, if you revv the car up when it is not in gear, nothing is wrong at all. Only when the transmission is engaged.

Update - on SR52 today, it started shuttering, SES light started flashing, indicating a misfire.

Limped it home, oil pressure guage surging and all.

Well I talk to a very knowledgeable friend and talked about replacing the wires. Got to the stop light at SR 54 and bruce b downs, and blue smoke starting trickling out from under the hood. I could smell the burning oil as well.

Get it home, I don't see where its leaking oil from yet, no more smoke though but I could hear the lifters clacking a little bit on my drivers side. I checked the oil and I have plenty of it, and my oil pressure guage still reads 60psi or above.

I don't think it threw a rod through the block because i would have dropped all the oil.

Maybe blown head gasket? I don't see how it could be that either because my car has never gotten hot.

      umm

are you sure its a lifter and not a fuel injector ticking?

      thing to check

      check oil for metal shavings
      check filer for same
      check fuel PSI (underload)

if its knocking you may have thowen a main/rod bearings

if it pinging for gods sake DO NOT REV IT OR GO WOT, your killing you pistons/rings/bearings gaskets ect.

get a 2 by 4 (pieac of wood not steal lol) and put it up against the block and put you ear on that if there something funky going on in that thing you'll know, have some give it few revs and slowy increase from idle to about 4000 rpm, some sounds only happen at certan rpms when the car is not under load.

I swapped out the wire and forgot how great the car ran before I ruined that wire. It was the #3 wire arcing extremely bad and it made no difference when I removed it from the coil pack. Put the MSD wire from the 92 in its place and the car runs great.

It was pouring so I didn't really get a chance to WOT to determine if it was still doing it.

However, I'm perplexed about the smoke coming from the hood breifly today. :? The clacking noise with the lifters did "seem" worse when I pulled it out of the garage.

I'll update when the weather dries out and I can hear the motor at WOT.

I WOT it last night when it stopped raining and it seems to be running fine. No more missing at all.

Still wondering where that clacking noise has always been coming from since about the 3rd month I've owned the car  ...still wondering about the burnt oil smoke coming from when it was missing extremely bad...it was very odd that it just lasted that one time.
