I have a '95 v6 3.4L camaro, and want to know if it is using the newer OBD II codes or needs a specific code-reader to check its fault codes? It will randomly kick on the 'service engine' light with no observable loss of hp, idle, compression, or timing. I want to buy a code reader but am not sure which type of reader I need.
Nevermind. I searched for OBDI and it found stuff for 94-95 F-body, which is exactly what I am looking for. Now to go about purchasing one. For reference, this is one I found.
"universal" indicats that it's based on Generic OBDII tech. Your going to need a real scanner that will cost you a lot of cash. I have yet to find ANY standered OBDII scanner that would work. Your probably better off getting a cable and some software and buying a cheep laptop.
Can u name some cheap alternatives of devices for reading codes, info gathering on internals e.t.c
thanx.
EDIT. something that employs a laptop and a cable coupled with software.
I use FreeScan on my 95 Lt1. It easy to find on the internet for free download. It is very basic but will allow to look at codes as well as reset them plus see a whole lot of other things going on. Can get a cable from AKMCABLES for about $90 I think. The 95 was a transition year that uses an OBDI pcm but an OBDII style diagnostic port connection. It confuses alot of people. If you don't have a laptop, you can drag your desktop out to the garage. Not sure what the deal is on the 3.4 setup though.
