Before I replace the thermostat of my 3800 99 camaro, I would like to know if it has a gasket or rubber ring. I was reading that gaskets will need RTV sealant.

My 96 3.8 has both. The rubber ring fits around the thermostat as it seats into position, and the gasket is need for the thermo housing-to-block connection. I put high temp silicone on both sides of the gasket and let it sit overnight to dry. I also put a very thin layer of high temp grease on the block and thermo housing before bolting it down. Keeps the silicone from binding to the metal.sigpicComment
