  • Starting Problem: Not an engine/starter problem, a clutch/electrical prob.

    Hey guys, here's the deal:

Im having problems with my 1996 Firebird starting. It isnt a problem with the engine or starter, its a problem with the clutch. You know how you have to push the clutch in to start the car? Well, the solenoid or whatever that senses when your clutch is or is not pushed in isnt working correctly...so even though I push the clutch in and turn the key, nothing will happen.

Sometimes though, if I push the clutch *really* hard or push it in and slowly, slowly let it out, it will engage, but it seems like there is just a 1 millimeter area (which changes every time I try to start the car, mind you) which will allow the car to start.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I actually bypassed that solenoid back in 1998 when it broke on me. I used a large paperclip, bent it into a U shape, and plugged it in. No problems since...
Only thing is that I don't need the clutch to start the car anymore, so I have to be careful that it isn't in gear as I'm cranking. I got used to it though.

Where exactly did you put this paper clip?

Look up under the pedal towards the top and see if the switch is there, may be a simple adjustment.

Yeah, I found the switch. Its going out.

If I just put a jumper in the socket that the switch plugs into will it bypass the switch and let the car start?

ok, I couldnt find a paper clip, so I cut up the metal arm on a binder clip (which is much thicker gauge than a paper clip) and shoved it in there and covered it with some tape.

I'd still like to replace the switch though in case other people drive my car.

The switch, btw, has two metal prongs which are connected and make contact with two metal plates to close the circuit. one of the metal prongs was broken off and just floating around in side the switch....thats why it would sometimes make contact and sometimes wouldnt. THanks for your help, guys!

I would just put a new switch in. In my opinion, the risk is not worth saving the $6.44.

gp sorensen (pn NS35), and I bet Niehoff and others make it too. If you took it out and got the part number off it you could order one from gmpartsdirect.com, I doubt it would be more than $15 from them and it would be a GM part.

I have had to put a couple on my car. If it starts acting up agian, you may have a loose connection where the switch goes in. (Took a couple of switches before I figured it out).
