ive been a member here for a while now and one thing ive noticed is the amount of simple questions asked in this forum. for example there are hundreds of posts on spark plugs, seafoam, SES lights etc. Now im sure everyone knows that these topics are not so mysterious, controversial, or complex that they require hundreds of posted topics dealing with them. They are there because the people who post them either do not know that there is something called a search button or they are too lazy to do so. This causes problems for the site. For one, it wastes time.
In the time it takes for you to ask which spark plugs to use or how to seafoam your engine, and then wait hours or days for someone to answer what has been discussed countless times before, you could search, go to your local auto parts store, buy what you need and install it before you would probably get 2 replies to your topic.
My advice to these people is to buy a shop manual. The $15-$20 you will spend on a Haynes or Chiltons manual is well worth it. If i wanted to, I could literally sit here and answer 80-90% of the topics in this forum using only my Haynes manual. It has all recomended maintanece intervals, what products to use, and detailed descriptions of how to do it yourself. Also it has a list of all OBDI and OBDII SES codes along with how to fix them. It also gives pages of symptoms and descriptions of certain problems you may be having and how to fix those. It goes into things as complex as an entire engine orverhaul as well.
Secondly, and probably the quickest/easiest way to find what you are looking for is to simply search. I know it has been said countless times here but it really is that easy. Im sure that no matter what problem you may be having, it is not unique to your vehicle. there are probably a hundred other people that have had the same problem as you and recieved an answer that you can find by simply searching.
I did not post this in hopes of making members angry or to make people feel stupid for asking basic questions. I posted this because i noticed that the General tech forum is completelty clogged by overdiscussed and basic topics that long time members have seen hundreds of times before. By simply searching or using a shop manual, you can help to greatly reduce these kinds of topics. As a result this forum can be used to discuss the more complex topics or those that have not been previously addressed. I think that this forum could really benefit from new and interesting topics.
