So i was changing my belt and cleaning the pullies because i have been hearing a little squeeking. I also changed the pcv valve because, well, i never have before. I removed the two bolts, took off the cover, used needle nose to pull it out with the spring, pulled spring off and put back in with new valve, then tightened down bolts and cover.

When i started it back up i noticed louder belt noise and a ticking sound coming from the area of the right valve cover (when facing engine) as well as more of a rough idle and more loping to the exhaust tone.

I used my haynes manual and it said to replace the o ring from the old one, but there was not one there. I guess in earlier models of the 3.8 there was, but that is my question. Does the 2000 model have an o ring?

I have searched this site and another one and noone said whether the 2k definately had one or not. Some said no, some said yes. I am worried that maybe it stayed inside the intake when i removed it.

The auto store guy said all it gave him was a part # on his computer, but didnt say whether it needed an o ring.

The acceleration and driving was better, just louder.

(also while turning the pullies i noticed the alternator pully was the only one that wasn't quiet, is it supposed to be?)

I know these are problably newbie questions, but i didnt find it answered completely.

    Thanks

    Brad

Thats normal, PCV valve is supposed to improve idle and response...

and no there's no O-Ring on it even on my 97...

i started thinking about it a little more and it makes sense. This is the first time i changed them since my mods, so if these were bad and i fixed them it should be louder. I was worried about the o ring. Thanks for clearing it up.

I guess most of the noise is the new belt, maybe it will quiet up a little when i put more miles on it.

      thanks

dont sweat it man. i change/clean the pcv normally. it does have an o ring. it is at the bottom. where the plug sits/sets into the hole. look in theie u'll see a little black strip. i havent had the need to touch it since it always stays in that spot.

also your alternator will make a noise regardless, it has two, what you hear is the thing working converting energy and whatnot. the fan also makes noise. listen to ur engine after driving a long while, it sould be the quitest youll hear it. and that my friend, is just how it is.

on another note, you claim to have only noise coming from the alternator only?.

The pullywas the only one that made noise when i spun it by hand. I guess it is just louder. Sound almost like when i have the ac on, thesound the comp. makes.

If you suspect pulley noise, when the car is cold, pull the belt off and start it up, see if the noise is gone.

That will determine if you have pulley problems or no.

I had some noise, I pulled the belt, and pulled the waterpump pulley off, cleaned/wiped it put it back. Then hit the back of all the pulleys/tensionors(except that alt) with liberal amounts of WD40.

put it all back together, and alot of the ticking I had went away.

Also I just did my PCV and didn't replace the seal or o-ring no problems as of yet but more midrange power it feels like.
