• High output alternator question

Hi guys, I did a search for this question and didn't come up with anything. I'm aware that when you upgrade to a high output alternator (I'm going to a 180amp) you need to upgrade your re-charge wire to 4 gauge. I was just wondering if it's a difficult procedure to do, taking out the old wire and hooking the 4 gauge one in in its place? I'm planning on installing the new alternator and wire in the upcoming week so I was just wondering if I should expect much trouble...

Thanks,
Brent

no... not at all...
just add a 4 (i would do 0) gauge wire from battery + to alt +, and do the battery neg o chasis and engine too while your at it...

its just as easy as crimping, cutting, and running the wire

I was going to get this wire from the company that's selling my alternator, does this make sense or would i be better off going with something else?

That would work but that's way to expensive. All you need is a few feet of 4-awg wire (5-feet should be plenty....better to have some extra to play with than be too short), 2 4-awg ring terminals and some split loom tubing. Check out Partsexpress.com for everything you need:

4-awg Power Wire per foot.
4-awg Ring Terminals 2 pack
Split Loom Tubing per foot.

Knukonceptz.com is another good place to buy everything as well. (prob one of the cheapest in price)

nice to see a lot of people get their alts from www.4alterstart.com

i was one of the first people to get their HO alt from them, so i was the guinnie pig But no complaints here 2 years later and its running strong.

You can go to auto zone and they have 4 gauge wires with the proper ends already crimped on. They go for like $5.00

Ok awesome. Here's the other thing I meant to ask...how did you guys go about running it? Is there a way to run it directly to the battery like the current one does? I could probably hook it up to the power block but wouldn't that ruin the purpose of getting a 4 gauge wire...the wire going from the block to the battery is back down to 8 or 10 gauge it looks like. Did you guys open up the battery terminal and put the new wire or what? Just wondering what works the best.

Don't use that "power block." Go directly to the battery itself. They make an adaptor bolt which allows you to use the factory terminal at the battery but it also allows you to add on additional wiring. Just simply remove the 8mm bolt holding the terminal on to the battery and use the adaptor bolt.

As far as routing the wire, just follow the path of the factory wire that goes to the alternator. Just keep it away from the exhaust or belts/pulleys. Use Zip ties to secure the wire as you run it.

Here ya go. Should sell those locally too. DO NOT connect to the + block! And follow the wire path that is there already. You're nukin it man. Couldn't get much easier.

Does your battery have top post also or just side posts?

You can get that adapter at your local auto zone ive seen them there.

I've just got the side posts and then a power wire that leads off into a seperate power block the the left of the battery right behind the headlight. The other thing I was thinking the other day is all my stereo equipment is wired to that block as opposed to the battery. There's a smaller lead going from that block to the battery so in a way thats kinda holding back the power my system gets isnt it? Am i better off just upgrading that wire to 4 gauge as well and just making a whole new terminal out of it with that wire and the new alternator recharge wire to plug into the battery?

Wire your amps and such directly to the battery!

Just leave that wire as be it will be fine.

If your going to run a large system also invest in a yellow top battery.
