  • Should I be worried about this?

Ok this morning I'm gettin ready to leave for school and I decide to drive my car because I haven't driven it in 3 days. So, I get in my car, fire it up, and it starts but it's idleing rough. Also, as soon as it fired up some whit smoke came out the exhaust tips. Well I thought it was normal because it was cold outside but it smelled funny. Anway after a minute the idle smooths out. I start backing down the driveway and I turn my wheels and I hear a loud, low-pitched moan. My car is a 2000 Camaro 5 speed with 32,000 miles on it. What do you think? This isn't the first time I've heard the noise from the steering or the first time it has idled rough when I start it but, it is the first time I've noticed smoke. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Andy

HOLY CRAP DON'T TOUCH YOUR CAR!!!!

JK My car does that same thing as far as the sound you heard. I think it comes from the rear brake setup. When you turn your wheels kind sharp while backing up it causes the setup to vibrate. At least thats what I think is going on. It freaked me out the first time I heard it. I have re-torqed the bolts in back but still get the same sound. It has been like that for almost a year now with no problems yet.

If someone knows the reason for this sound please let us know.

as far as the groan.. check your powersteering fluid.. I think this is a "normal" thing when it comes to cold morning and our steering racks/pumps..
