• Ticking on drivers side

There is a very loud ticking coming from the driver's side of my sister's '96 3.8L. She had a set of pacesetters installed last year and it's ticked since then. She's been driving it with the exhaust leaking at the y-pipe the whole time since the people who installed it didn't properly tighten the bolts on the y-pipe. Would a simple plug/wire change fix the problem or is there a deeper issue? The engine sounds like total crap now. I'm going to change the oil and filter, if plugs and wires will help I'll do that too.

My bet would be on the EGR. The Pacesetters have horrible problems with trying to get the EGR pipe to seal on the header.

I have the smae problem with mine.
It's the EGR. The pipe from the EGR does not sit properly in the exhaust (the hole is the wrong size) and therefore does not seal properly. The 'ticking' is the sound of exhaust gases escaping.

I intend to fashion a adapter plate to rectify the problem.

Couldn't I just block it off or maybe put some gasket maker on it?

Yep. I had an exhaust shop completely weld over the EGR outlet from the header. No air getting through now.
