  • Bad coil pack?

At lunch today I was looking around the engine bay and noticed a couple cracks on top of the coil pack for cylinders 3 and 6. The crack is about 1/2 an inch long and there is another 1/4 of an inch crack perpendicular to that one. They both have what looks like to be brown corosion around the cracks. Is that just a cover on top of the coil packs and is it nothing to worry about or am I getting moisture in there and that is what is causing the rough idle and chugging at cruising speeds.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am not to familiar with coil packs.
Also, how do you gett them off and is it a complicated job?

hmm.. sounds like you need a new coil pack. if you have a misfire in wet weather, its prolly cause of that. in any case, a cracked coil pack, or ignition module wont help performance any. id recommend replacing it as soon as yuo get the chanc. you'll need a 5.5mm socket to get the bolts off that hold teh coil pack in place. besides that, its an easy fix. good luck

Thanks, I replaced it last night and started the car and it ran worse than it did before, the car was rocking back and forth when I first started it and when I tried to drive it around the parking lot it wouldn't idle down all the way. So, I unplugged the battery to clear the PCM and let it sit overnight. This morning it started
normally, still running rough at idle but it seemed to have a little better acceleration and did not miss as much at cruising speeds.
I still have one original coil pack left I might try changing that one and see what happens.

I know you might have done this already but you might want to check the wires are tight and in the right plugs (#1 going to cylinder 1, #2 to 2 and so on) and then check the connections at the plugs completely disconnect and then reconnect the wire to the plug. with the headers I'm sure that's a pretty simple job unlike those of us who have to crawl under the car to get to 4 of the 6 plugs.
