  • HELP...car missing out.

ok. when coming to a stop my car occassionally will start bogging down as if it is missing out. the check engine light came on once and the code read cylinder 5 misfire. replaced coil and spark plug. wires were done recently. and it still does it at low speeds like less than ten miles per hour or when braking. seems to be a little sluggish at take off. any help would be greatly appreciated. i have run out of thoughts. any ques to help answer my prob just ask.

    its a 98 3.8 A4

Sounds like you need new spark plug wires. GM's boo-boo when they ran the passenger side spark plug wires way too close to the intake manifold causing them to burn and misfire.
I would replace all of the spark plug wires with a good set of performance wires.
If GM re-did your spark plug wire(s), I'd DEFINATELY replace them again.

Like he said, your wires are probably burnt and/or arcing. Replace them with thicker-than-stock wires and be carefully how you route them.

P.S. - Try to make your topic title's a little bit more specific than HELP...

ok ill look at them... they are just the equivalent to stock wires. so they are probly crap. the thing that mystifies me is that the missing out is not consistent. what are some good aftermarket wires for a decent price or does anyone have an extra set laying around that they want to get rid of.

Taylor, Accell, MSD, Blue Max, even Autolite has got good ratings. If you are gonna do them yourself, I would suggest buying custom wires that you will need to cut-to-fit. They work the best because you can route each one to fit exactly where you want them to. Accell makes custom-fit wires, along with a few other companies.

ok.....going to return the pos wires under warranty. and my mechanic told me it could be my fuel injectors because it only does it in idle and low rpms. however after leaving the mechanic it missed out while driving on a hill. he told me to put some techron injector cleaner. i am still going to replace wires. i used stp injector cleaner the other day and he said carbon build up may have gotten trapped in the egr.

            any opinions?????

Well, now the money is gonna start rolling outta your pocket. Injectors, Carbon in the EGR, Replacing the EGR, whatever... You need solid answers, not possibilities. I can't stress this enough; Take it to the Dealer to get it checked out. Even though it'll cost you about $65 to just hook the machine up to scan your car, they will save you money in the long run because they will pinpiont your problem, and ask you if you want it fixed before they go ahead and do it.
All of this is just incase the replacement wires don't fix your problem.

One more thing, I just read your mods. You may want to replace the MAF screen. There is alot of controversy surrounding that subject. Some say it made their car perform better, other's say it screwed their car up. I still have mine installed to eliminate any possible guessing of the two.
It also may be a good idea to reinstall the cat-conv before you go to the dealer. I'm not sure if they will work on your car without one.
